Once you have received payment, click on details. If the fee was $0.00, that is your first indication it was a gift. However there are other methods to send with no fees, for instance mass payment so this one indicator doesn't prove it was a gift.

To make sure it was a gift, click the "issue a refund" link.

If it was indeed a Gift, under "Refund Amount" it will say:
(Partial refunds are not available for personal payments or for transactions marked as pending)

As long as it's not a pending payment, it was a Gift. If you're able to make a Partial Refund it was NOT a gift payment.

Awesome! Thanks Mikey!

Thanks for the info!

Also, if you can see a shipping adress, it's usually an indication that it's not a gift!

Making it a gift makes harder for buyer to get his money back after you deliver.

If it's gift, he most likely won't be able to click refound since he suposely didn't buy anything, but just give you a gift. The way he might try to get his money back with "Gift" option is to say he didn't make the payment, but anyway it's harder to do it.

I am confused, what does this mean exactly? Do we WANT our payments to be gift payment or not? What is the best way to prevent being scammed?
Sending a payment via Paypal as a Gift means the sender cannot dispute the payment. This provides very good protection for sellers and none for buyers.

Sellers with lots of positive feedback who are established many times require payments as gifts to protect themselves.

However scammers also ask buyers to send payments as gifts so after the scam, the buyer can't get their money back. You should only send a Gift payment if you are positive you are dealing with a legit seller.

Gift payments can easily be disputed from your credit card company or bank. Neither method is "safer" to send. I actually prefer goods/services with a note to the effect of "server work" or "web hosting" as these types of purchases are hard to prove and generally do not win if disputed.

I see, so as a seller you want it to be a gift. What about as a buyer, is it considerd polite to give it as a gift or it is smarter to do it as a payment so there's some form of insurance if you mess up?

No, it used to be that if you sent a Gift payment it couldn't be disputed on Paypal. Sellers would ask buyers to send payment as a Gift to protect themselves since the buyer wouldn't be able to dispute it.

However some buyers were sending payments normally and just telling the seller they sent it as a Gift. Once they got the item they would then dispute the payment. So this guide is to show how you can check if the payment you received is a gift or not.

Gift payments can be disputed now as Paypal changed the rule a few months ago.

I have used paypal for several years now and in the past i have been able to send money as gift but recently i notice i no longer have that option. Anyone knows why is that so? Is it due to region?

ya may have to check and refer to the paypal's policy update that might had affected your country :) they did remove personal payment/gift payment for some countries b4.

would gift payment still be teh safest way to go, even though it can be disputed? what are some necessary steps in making sure that if you do sell something, you receive and keep the payment? (through paypal)

Oh I see, I been looking for ways to receive payments I received were gifts, thanks a. Ton Mike <3

Very very helpful. Thank you!

Attempt to refund the paypal payment without actually refunding it. When you click the refund it'll take you to a confirmation page. If it says something along the lines of the following, then it's a gift/personal payment:

(Partial refunds are not available for personal payments or for transactions marked as pending)

I had some problems today didn't know if it was a gift or not, I did what it said in the thread but I keep getting this
"You can not initiate a dispute about the transaction right now. It is usually due to transaction has not yet been completed. If there is a completed transaction, double check that the transaction ID of your choice refers to a payment you have made."

But then I used my other Paypal account to send money as gift to the other one to see if I got the same message but I didn't "You can not initiate a dispute concerning this transaction because it does not involve the purchase of goods or services. Contact the recipient directly."

Don't know what to do... helpz

I am sorry to bump the thread But I have one question:
How do you guys (sellers) receive payment? Always as gift or?

Can my paypal account get blocked or something if I receive all payments as gifts?

I use gift for larger payments and services for lower, primarily because of the high fee involved for higher amounts.
