what is up with peoples' gearscore?

After lots of research, while trying to sell my wow account... I've noticed everyone uses the gearscore addon number... instead of the wow-heroes gearscore.

First of all... the addon is not correct. people that are a lower level can have a higher gear score than you. After reading the maker's info... he says part of it is based on the rarity of the item; and that it certianly doesnt have all the factors of wow-heroes configured into it.

So I dont understand why people use this number from the gearscore addon in the first place. It's not at all accurate. Well, I halfway do.. it makes u look better to other people. But still... people should be using the wow-heroes gearscore if anything. since it factors in so many other things.

I know gearscore doesnt mean skill. But using the gearscore addon compared to wowheroes... isnt accurate.
 
Because it's easier and gives a general idea to someone how good the gear is.
 
Personally, I dont see a need for gearscore period.

5100 GS x 0 Skill = 0

3400 GS x 5 Skill = 17000

I hope you can see where I am coming from, gearscore does not make a player.
 
GS may not make a player but it gives a pretty good indication of how much time they put into the toon.

And it's especially useful with the way pug'ing has become the norm.

this and even if you have skill with a 3000 gs your dps will still be limited. your ability to perform does vary by your gear.

Because personal skill has anything to do with the character when you selling it right ?
Whether you got carried for the gear or put forth the work, the sad truth is it's worth the same.

This is true, but at least you are able to maximize your dps with that 3000gs, it depends how you play. Personally, Im not an elitist jerk, I dont mind wiping a couple of times so people can learn, I have plenty of gold and patience.
 
It's just a quick reference - Personally when I look at an account I am more interested in the value of what the character holds because that is what makes you want to keep playing. For example if I see an account for trade/sell that has the title "5800 GS" I will be intrigued but if I see a title that says "Spectral Tiger Mount" or "Hand of Rag" well I start getting giddy like it was the first time I saw either of those two items.

Alas it's just another measurement - I am sure soon enough there will be something like Awesome Points. In that case I will have 0 -_-
 
I left WoW quite a while before the GS was brought in, but I have a few friends who still play it. As for trading purposes I can see how its usefull, but using it as a ingame tool to recruit people for guilds or groups/raids seems like a bad idea. WoW is probably the easiest game out there to gear up in, witch clearly shows if you have raided on there for a extent period of time. Just finding people who can keep track of the timers and take a step to the left to avoid something can be pretty rare.

Not to mention that alot of players dont even know how to gear their characters properly, a high gearscore can be just that..high GS items, theres no gaurantee that its optimal gear for his spec or class.
 
Gearscore is good for a general indication of how good a player is (Its bad but still works at certain numbers) things like 5k gearscore are the norm as they can be gotten in just 5 man heroics whereas things like 6k gs is fairly impressive as you need ICC 25 gear or wrathful gear to get that high which means the player as at least the ability to move out of blue fire of doom

a very simple explanation, pve has changed in a big way, leading too pug < guild raiding. if you want a quick run down on a char, showing your gear score says alot. some people say it doesnt well tell me this , would you get a pally tank gear score 4.5 k gearscore too tank ICC 25 HEROIC if he/she said they knew the fight ? now tell me experience over gear? thats what i thought.

yea alot of noobs who go for gearscore rather then stats or whats better for your class so gs isnt always amazing if the guys sucks then hes a bad
 
I played long before GS came in, and I'm only just getting back into the game. The sad thing is that I'm noticing things i've seen on other games, at a certain point in time of a game's life the long term players pull so far away from the nubs that there's no way to catch up.

-- taking GuildWars for example, to participate in a *Good* team for the hall of heroes, you need atleast Rank 7-8 to even be looked at, but how do you get such a rank? By winning in the hall of heroes... It's a vicious circle where the good get better, and the nubs get ganked trying to pug and getting roflraped.

^^^ Now to put that in WoW terms, You need a certain amount of GS to join *Good* raids, but how do you get that decent GS? By succesfully raiding... Down with GS, find people by skill and stop judging by their gear (which was probably bought/run).

No, you get that decent GS by not being a lazy arse and running heroics/lesser raids, until you're geared up. People not having the gear and complaining about not getting into raids is their own fault. If they'd get off their butt and run heroics like the rest of us, they would be fine.

You've obviously never done this, running heroics does nothing but get you a gs about 5.4 if you're lucky.

GS is a terrible way to tell if a player is going to be a asset or just dead weight.

heroics / emblems = entrance to raids. Done it many times, and have done just fine.

Most people here are missing the point of the thread. It's not whether or not gear score is important, it's whether or not wow-heroes.com's gear score script is better than the addon. Regarding that, I have to agree with the original poster, wow-heroes.com's script is superior to the addon.

wow-heroes.com is indeed much better. I think maybe once the add-on goes through a few phases it could be superior however.

gearscore = the following things possibly.. 1.. time played to get that gearscore means he's probaly a descent player.. pay attention and knows fights 2.... what you can expect IF he knows his class to be his dps give or take.. or hps... 3.... allow the "rooster of the hen" mines bigger than yours " TOOLS" to be tools every day... i mean.. would you rather drive a porsche or a metro? LOL.... cause 4500gs VS 5400gs... if 4500 is AWESOME.. his dps.. probaly won't be good.. but he may not wipe the raid by having his pet pull early lol.. but.. 5400gs can tap tap tap click click click random stuff and probaly out dps him.. but again.. 75% of wow players arent' on mmobay trading.. so im sure they leveled their accnt and know how to play it lol
 
I notice that Alli side they generally use WoW Heroes, Horde sides use the addon, the addon is alright for selling, it gives someone an idea of the gear type on the account, as far as playing goes--someone can easily use PVP gear instead of PVE gear to get in a raid, WoW Heroes I tend to like because it shows what they have done (as far as forming raids, pugs, what have you), because if someone comes in a raid with me and says they know 11/12 of fights and I check them out on WoW heroes and they haven't even done anything yet I pretty much know where to go. I am just so used to posting WoW heroes for sales, but the addon is more reliable when it comes to sales.

Just like this joke from /2:

The gear score add-on is amazing....the only people who compain about GS are the people that have never had to alt+Tab to check armory. Anybody remember meeting at the North/South bank at the fountain so you can be checked by raid leader...yea, GS is pretty much the ****. Even when GS didnt exist we still had to kick people from runs because they didnt know their class or they were performing subparl. So finally to my point.......QQ more about GS, its a great tool and saves tons of time. Flame away

Well, when it comes to GS in game.
GS is nice just to get The gear part down.
BUT. its not every thing. That is why ppl ask for a achive.
achive + GS is all you SHOULD need for a legit raid/party
imo anyways.
as for accounts. there is so so so so much more to defining its worth then a gs haha, gs is more a bait deal, like hey. 6k GS yummys.
