If you are dealing with a middleman on site you do not necessarily need one, it depends on comfort levels. If you are dealing with someone on a messenger service that says they are a middleman on site. verify with their account here that its really them.
I wouldnt use a middleman when dealing with a middleman, none of the middlemen would ever scam, think about it from Epicnpc perspective, would he really hire anyone if there was the slight chance they'd scam?
