I've recently sold an account under the premises where the buyer would pay via the Paypal Gift option. I was under the impression that the buyer cannot make any disputes by using Gift, but apparently a dispute was made where the buyer claimed that he didn't make such transactions; effectively stealing my account.

I confirmed (or thought I did) that the buyer paid through gift by the fact that I was charged no fees for receiving the money.

In those situations its was likely a stolen paypal account that was used by a scammer.

I received a payment that was paypal gift, a few days later,PayPal cancelled the payment because the sender's bank cancelled it. so in my opinion, gift isn't as safe as regular PayPal payments. The sender still can do a dispute by "unauthorized " or chargeback even though the payment was sent by gift.

So WU aside, how would I be able to make a safer transaction?

My general idea of a "safe" transaction:

1) have the sender send me a email using their paypal email confirming the transaction
2) have the sender pay using payment owed/gift and in the note confirming that the transaction is of intangible goods and by making this transaction he forfeits the right to all disputes or refunding.

However this doesnt exclude the fact that the buyer can still dispute via his bank account.

Also, what can I do now that I've lost the account? I have the same account info as the buyer. What are my options at this point?

The way I do things with every trade to at least give myself some security.

I get the user to PM me from their account with a special keyword or phrase to verify its them.

I ask what the paypal email is that I will be receiving money from, and get them to send me an email from that email address

and of course I ask them to post on my thread most of the time :P

Just to clarify, even if a user notes that its for intangible goods and says he forfeits all rights to dispute, paypal doesnt work in favor of that, they will still hold his right to dispute a transaction.

So the only safe way to trade is to use W.U.?

Also my best options now are to bite the bullet and submit a refund to his dispute, I suppose?

I can still retrieve the account with the SQA, but multiple retrievals will likely have it suspended and I lose the account anyways.

WU is pretty good but Ive never used it so I couldnt tell you.

You probably will not win the dispute considering it was probably a stolen paypal. I'd try to recall your wow account.

Gift or not, you can cancel/recall any type of payment from paypal. The whole "you cannot retract gift payments" is a myth. Anything can be reversed, its as simple as a call to paypal or the bank you're with.

Paypal payments aren't scam proof, no matter how you try to jiggle the payment, or what you get the buyer write up for you. For example credit card chargebacks are outside Paypals jurisdiction, so lets say I top my Paypal account with a credit card to buy something from you and once I have obtained it, I will do a chargeback via my credit card company not via Paypal, now Paypal doesn't like this, but if the CC company sees it my way then when the call comes from said company, Paypal will have no choice but to oblige regardless what they think of it. Same goes with banks, and since we are dealing with intangible goods and the immaturity of online payments, It wouldn't take anything special from me to convince them I have been scammed, as you have really no evidence of selling me anything or even having any goods to sell in the first place. Now Western Union is a whole lot safer as long as the ammount you are receiving isn't that high, because it's likely that nobody would want to try out anything with Western Union staff for peanuts, as trying to pull off a fraud in person actually gets you in trouble if you get caught, unlike sitting behind your pc and scamming peoples mmorpg accounts by playing with the ridiculous flaws of Paypal and peoples trustiness in general to few simple words.

To prevent being paid from stolen paypal:

-Ask thm what his name is.
-Ask them to send you 0.1$, refund.
-Ask them to send you an email from the paypal account.
-Ask them to send you the full payment.

I have been contacted by paypal hackers more than once, this are some facts i could compile:
-They normally work like a small company so the guy talking to you doesnt know wich paypal is he using since he needs to ask to his "manager"
-They cant send payments as normal, they are going to try to make many payments or just one, because paypal locks the accounts right when they use the paypals.
-They dont have access to the email.
-If they manage to send you an email, take a few minutes "reading or checking it", to give time to paypal to lock the account or flag it.
-If your buyer its a hacker, and you followed these steps, either he wont be able to send the payment (and hes gonna start calling you a scammer for no reason), or the payment will be flagged, so check it carefully and check your paypal's email.

Even with those steps you can still be hacked/scammed, but being a lil safer, always helps.

Cheers !

Here's my proposal to stop unauthorized transactions.

Unauthorized Green Dot PayPal transfer is the only 100% scam proof way to receive money by PayPal but it's a hassle and can only be used for $250/year. After that, you have to submit your social security number. Mass Pay is 99.9% safe.
