I spent 3+ years since beta, over ~3,000 hours on it, spent ~$120 on gem + $120 on gw2 accounts, and I just asked for extra $50 for my 3,000 hours of effort... I think this is very reasonable. Probably you able to earn $50 in 4 hours with a part time job, that cost would save you thousands hours..
