Is this worth reporting to higher authorities?

So i put up my account for sale and i got a buyer very quickly. His name was william11ab , so we got on aim and chatted it through. Sounded like he spoke poor english but i thought, hey i'm getting paid who cares... boy was i wrong.

He paid me through paypal for $600.00 USD, the paypal account name was registered as "Bead Art By Treena" from Houston Texas. Within about an hour of the transaction, they filed a claim and by Sunday the money was returned. So i called paypal and gave them hell... they said if i didn't ship anything than theirs no way i can get my money back.

Next step was to recall my WoW account, i got it back about an hour ago. I looked at my bags, some stuff was destroyed and he had leveled mining to 375 along with herbalism. He also had a ton of mail with gold, looks like a gold farmer right? Next thing i know, somebody who i did not add on my friends list... logs in. I ask him if he knew me, he told me i sold him gold a few days ago. Next i asked him if he knew the company, he told me http://www.oofay.com .

So i went to their site and got there phone number, its area code 713... Houston Texas. I thought to myself, the money was paid from Houston Texas and now the company using my account for gold farming is from Houston Texas... what a coincidence right? So my question for you fellow Markeedragoneirs is if this is worth reporting to the authorities? Maybe i can get my money back if i prove it was all a scam? Any help is appreciated, brining these douchebags to justice would make my day really.

uh, no. its blizzards intellectual property, u cannot sell your account. so even if you did give him info and he recalled money it doesnt matter because you were never owner of the account, blizzard is.

Just because blizzard says i cannot sell the account doesn't mean it isn't worth anything for me. Blizzard are peons in the world of law, they don't make the rules.. the U.S. government does & the U.S. government says you cannot scam people of their property. I'm going to need the opinions from people who have dealt with things like this before i actually do anything.

Steve I'd advise you to go ahead and file a complaint with your local police department. After being scammed by someone in Houston myself I decided to see if there was any recourse available to me. Fraud is fraud and *is* against the law. Don't listen to bucc33, he doesn't have a clue. If we don't report these crimes, who will? Good luck! (I actually was lucky and my money was returned... after the police were brought into the mix.)

Make a report... But I do not think you will get to go too far because they are probly in china...

Yeah but you weren't scammed of your property because it's Blizzard's property.

But give it a shot! Say you were selling your time played on the account, or you were selling information.

You're not really selling the account per se, but the time YOU put into improving it. Blizzard only sells us the place to store the characters, we make them what they're worth and at the end of the day no matter who owns whats on that account blizzard still gets paid the same amount for renting it out

What alot of people don't understand about the laws on theft... Even tho PayPal doesn't recognize the sale of Virtual Goods, and Blizzard's EULA specially prohibits it.. it does NOT make it legal.

If I tell you I am selling you a Gmail account for $1,000... you agree to it, send me $1,000, and then recall your payment... you're guilty of grand larceny, as well as possible wire fraud charges if you pay with a Credit Card.

Blizzard can say whatever they want in their TOS and EULA, it doesn't make it law, and it certainly doesn't supersede state and federal laws.

However this is going to cost you money and alot of term to pursue the scammer, and since you got your account back your best bet would be to put in a petition in game stating your account was hacked and some items are now missing, and they will restore those items for you.

If you want to spend the time and money to pursue the matter to make an example of the person then more power to you, however it might be worth your while to cut your losses and appreciate the free gold / trade skills.

PS. Claim the person stole your gold, claim that you had a large amount of gold that is now missing, and they may restore some of the gold the guy farmed and resold.
