We have added a new chat icon
chat-user.png
in members profile area. The member list in the main chat box has also been removed.

If someone is online, this chat icon will appear in your profile. If offline, nothing will display. Anyone can click it to start a chat.

Currently there is a discrepancy between the normal online/offline indicator and the chat icon. The instant chat is a 3rd party system and uses different parameters to determine if someone is online or offline. We are going to sync these two indicators so they display the same online/offline status, however it's not yet ready. We'll have this done over the weekend.

The way it was before was much better. I could easily find people from the chat window and message them instead of sending Private Messages. Now that option is gone. It was very useful for middleman trades as well, because i would create groups in chat rather than using PM system.

I dont understand why the change was made. Was it slowing the site again? It would be nice to have at least search button feature on the chat so that you search for a username and if he is online you can message him/add to group chat.

No, it didn't cause any loading issues. It was removed for simplification reasons.

We didn't want spammers to go down the list messaging everyone. A new "chat" icon appears in the users profile area, so if someone is browsing the site or reading a PM, they will be able to start a instant chat by clicking the button from that page.

I assumed the list would no longer be useful because of that reason. we're also contemplating making the "hover box" in the bottom right disappear completely. it would only appear if someone had an active chat with someone.

If you're doing a MM transaction, you can just open an instant chat from the PM page with one of the member's, then add the other member, so it's still possible to do and not much different.

Makes sense with the Chat button, but still perhaps would be easier to spot the spammers and ban them on sight? Since spamming is against the rules anyways. I understand it could be difficult to code somethign like i described, but would be very useful.

On a side note, can I still make group chats if I started a chat with 1 user and want to add another one. Is the old "Add participants" button still there?

P.S. NVM, you can add other people to group chat. so all good!

The chat is 3rd party and does not run on our server so it's not possible to create any costume coding for it. We can only make changes using the built in options.

Yes, group chats are still possible, same as before.

Return the member list/search please, at least for upgraded members if spamming is the issue.

Yeah the search option at least would be nice, but if I understood correctly you can't bring only 1 feature back =(

PS. I see no chat icons to people that are online on the forum. Is the chat being updated or? I checked on a guy that replied to my message in this thread within 1 minute and I didn't have the chat icon next to his name.

I still get spams even with this chat disabled, so I think best way was to just temp-ban/give infractions to those spammers. It would be most effective.

He didn't contact many members, only 3, so it wasn't really spam. More of an unsolicited message if you don't have any posts in the PSN or Xbox forums. But you can give an infraction for that. Smod can also kick or ban users from the chat, so you can do that also if you suspect mass spam.
