"How to not get scammed" by HellHulk [13 years experience with game trades]

Greetings gamers,

Today I am posting some valuable information that could potentially save you some time, headaches, and money. A little background on me, I am 39 years young hardcore gamer since Atari came out. I have been in the trading scene for online mmos for over 13 years. I have successfully completed over 100 trades/sells for accounts, money, and real world items.

I have been scammed myself over 10 times in the course of my trading adventures. It is one of the worst feelings to log onto your much loved new account to see you no longer have access to the account. You feel a deep sense of betrayal at a level that is like your home was broke into. Seeing that funds have been retracted from your paypal account AND your account is gone is much worse.

One of the biggest scams to me happened over 10+ years ago. I have always had a history of 100% trades/sells on Ebay, Paypal, Egamingsupply.com, and EpicNpc. I had acquired an item in Earth and Beyond that was the only laser on any server. One of a kind UBER drop. Sold it on Ebay for 3600.00 within 4 hours of listing. Gave item ingame to the guy, transferred the money to my checking account, four days later dispute opened and Paypal sided with the other guy as he said his CC was stolen. Quite clear I had been royally scammed. I was unable to use my paypal account for several years due to this. One of the reasons I HATE scammers with a passion.

-Tips to avoid being scammed-

1. Speak via cell whenever possible. In this day in age, almost everyone has a mobile device. This will help you screen some scammers. Most scammers wont even speak on the phone.

2. When on Skype and you want to verbally talk, and they decline with "My mic is broken" but will not speak via cell either. Avoid.

3. When speaking they seem overly anxious to trade. Being anxious is ok, but when it gets to the point that they are almost forcing the trade then that's a clear sign they are a scammer.

4. If they consistently ask for you to go first even when you have 20+ reputation with a website, and they have zero. They are a scammer.

5. If they use "leet" speak in IM's and have no professional bearing whatsoever, then psychologically this denotes a young age with possible low integrity. I am not stating all kids are scammers, but in my experience, younger generations seem to feel that non-tangible items are just a game and only nerds play them. Personally, integrity is what you do when no one is looking in my opinion. I value my time very much. A game may be non-tangible but my time is not to me. Avoid.

6. If they will not provide proof via screen share, or to the degree you feel comfortable with then remove yourself form the conversation and tell them why.

7. When selling an account be sure that YOU request the payment from your paypal as a gift, and that the buyer agrees by paying to not be able to dispute said funds for any reason. it is a gift, and no goods have been exchanged. This will help prevent a paypal dispute, and again, leaves the buyer with ZERO protection. A scammer is not going to follow through with this. They will offer excuses.

8. I have found people to be requesting game time, or offering accounts for game time cards to be higher risk of a scam. WHY you ask? Well lets just be honest, there are children and there are adults. People who play sub games has to pay to play. Adults generally have jobs, children usually have to depend on parents. Now, when a kid's favorite game is unplayable because funding from parents has stopped they become desperate. They will lie, cheat, and scam to get that game time. They will even feel "proud" of themselves for having scammed adult with the idea that they were smarter. They were not smarter, they just lacked morals. Avoid such trades as those accounts will more then likely be reclaimed. They may even trade a frozen account to let you pay time, then reclaim as well. When doing a trade be sure to state account must be active. Period. You will cut your losses I assure you.

9. Research the person your trading with. Require them to post in your thread while on Skype. Impersonations happen often. Look at their profile, see what threads they are currently viewing. if you are patient you can tell what their intentions are sometimes.

EX. Guy sells Wildstar beta account with zero feedback, will not go first even with rep'ed members, then someone buys it. WHY IN THE HELL would he be viewing WTB WILDSTAR threads right after the sell of the ONLY wildtstar account he had? He just got one rep, someone got the account, and he is trying to get a quick sale of 2-3 more people before it is noticed. Be foot smart when dealing with people. Don't be scared to be nosy.

10. Be honest. Whether you get scammed or not, always be true to your own morals and values. Don't let someone else with poor integrity make you a dishonest person. Being honest will pay off down the road. I get offers all the time for great accounts for very low amounts simply due to my feedback.

11. Do repeat business with trusted members of the site. They earned their reputation, and offer solid trades, feedback, and are the backbone of EpicNpc. Add them to friends, and check daily to see what new accounts they have. I myself rotate through accounts daily, at least one a week.

In closing, be honest.
Scamming is generally a one shot deal. Why scam when being honest has such a better payout? Reputation gets you better trades and sells.
Don't be rude on Skype, treat all conversations as if you are standing in front of the person. If your not interested say so. Don't say you are then go poof on Skype while it says your online. People wait. I do.

I hope this information is informative and helps some of you avoid scams. If you ever have questions please don't hesitate to call me or contact me on Skype.

Thank you, wish I had access to all the posts I had done at the other site. Would just copy+paste them all. Seven years of info down the drain.

Is there a way to tell if a PayPal payment from a buyer has been sent to you via merchant or gift payment? It looks like PayPal has changed their format and the only options when sending money are to select "I'm paying for goods or services" and "I'm sending money to family or friends." I assume the family or friends option is for a gift payment, but I sent a test payment to my wife's PayPal account via gift and the verification e-mail she received said nothing about it being a gift, only that it was sent from my PayPal account.

I don't want to assume a payment sent to me is a gift, have it actually be a merchant payment which can later be disputed and potentially stolen. I'm in the process of selling an EverQuest account for the first time and just want to make sure I cover myself so I am not scammed. The account is pretty good, so I just want to take whatever precautions I can to not be out both the account and buyer payment. Thanks!

The best way is to "request" the payment yourself as a gift through family and friends. In the description type, "By accepting to send payment we have verified our identities to eachother, agreed to gift (amount here) as friends and family, and by sending payment you agree to not dispute said funds for any reason. This is a gift, and no properties whether physical or intellectual have changed hands."

Key here is to send the request. IF you don't send the request they can contact paypal and say I meant 20.00 not 200.00. Always send the request with the terms saying you verified their identity, the amount, and that it is undisputable.

They have zero protection, and obviously scammers will renig on the spot.

If people don't agree to my terms the trade/sell is over. Period.

The way I see it they are paying to deal with a reputable person who has proven to be honest time and again.

Hope this helps!

Great post, hope it helps a lot of people. On point 2 though, I never talk to people using a mic. I like to get the entire conversation in writing so that I can prove me side if there is ever a dispute. Maybe I'm wonky though =D

Thanks for the information, I'll hold onto this thread in future transactions.

Edit: Paypal gifting is no longer acceptable, and per customer service against the "spirit" of a gift. They told me you had more protection doing goods/services. Honestly though, they don't support virtual sales still.

I didn't understand. Why is paypal gifting no longer acceptable? And if they don't support virtual sales, which is the best option?

Thanks for the tips! Im a little nervous about this type of thing but reading this makes me feel a lot better

Im not sure if it's relevant and maybe it's common sense or I'm wrong but I'd like to add don't give too much info from your account till you've actually seen the payment go through. A. They could be a hacker and the more info you give the better chance they have of taking your account and B. they could report you in game. Most likely nothing would come of it but its not really worth the risk

how do u do this? there is no option to request gift

Gifting no longer works.

There is no point.

People have 60 days to contest anything even a gift.

You are always at risk. Just be clear that you will have whatever you sold banned in the event of a recall of funds.

Thanks you, very useful guide.

if I ever have time will do a complete guide for everything including how to make money. Just a matter of getting time to do so.

I graduate next week so hopefully I get more time before going back to work.

another tip:
When someone pays you ask him to send you an email from the same email he uses for paypal like "I pay X$ for X to (your paypal) and skype or w/e. Transaction ID: xy" Bc scammer can trick someone to pay you and then the scammed guy will chargeback or complain and thats not good for you.
Like if someone who has US location on Skype but he pays from non-US paypal etc.

Great post.

Another tip I feel is relevant,If your a buyer only deal through moneybrookers or paypal. If someone requests western union or a bank transfer take that as a warning sign. Western union is basically like sending your money to the middle of nowhere. If a scammer wants to they can take the money and not supply any details and there's nothing you can do about it. Same with a bank transfer, as is it's not classified as a transaction and is near impossible to reverse.

Paypal and moneybrookers both have recourses if there's a problem. They aren't foolproof, nor would I trust them implicitly, but at least you have options if someone tries to scam you as a buyer.

A seller needs more faith and trust though to deal with these two, like I say they aren't foolproof ;)

Your text is good, but unfortunately, with all caution you will still get scammed if some1 wants to scam you. I got scammed even on eBay, ppl selling me stolen cd keys and I got banned for it. And not eBay or Paypal have done anything about that, there were numerous complaints, people were changing even their usernames.
I also wanted to do some ingame gold exchanges, like from one server to another, or buying cd keys with gold... got f*cked up every time, so in the end it's just better to buy some things on official stores/channels

Awesome guide. Having dealt with scammers on both ends before, I think this kind of information applies to almost every online transaction (Not just the account business).

I need to update this. Been meaning to make a complete sale guide with everything I know. I want to move on from the sales side and run my twitch instead. Play for people seems like way more fun to me. Just need the followers and sponsors to do so.

Donations welcome! Paypal set up. I give beta keys away as well with support from MMO Beta Store. I hope this is my new full time job by next month!

TY again for all the posts!

Nice guide. Hope this helped some people out!

Good guide but in all honesty it leaves out a lot of tricks that scammers will try on you. The biggest one that comes to mind is impersonation of a trusted person/MM, etc on Skype (similar looking username, etc). In all honesty the best method is just to use your gut feeling (which unfortunately only comes with practice); scammers generally are desperate to get the goods from you - so they'll do silly things like offer higher prices for you to hurry up, or my favorite "i have to go to bed in 10 minutes so can we do the deal quickly."
Sadly, getting scammed is just part of the e-trading world.

I agree with your post. I have been meaning to do an complete guide for my 15 yrs in the industry to sale here at epic but just haven't had the time to do such.

MM impersonations is a reality and I am impersonated ALOT here at epic. Just yesterday I was contacted in regards to someone thinking they had used me as a MM when the Skype name had a "." in it that mine clearly doesn't.

Its sad when these things happen but honestly some scams could be avoided simply be "reading"

I have posted extensively on how to avoid this. My MM post even breaks the process down. I always POST in the sale thread and have the buyer/seller post as well.

A little reading goes a long way.
