Is there some sort of middle man system people agree on? I've received a few offers already and just don't want to fork over random amounts of money to strangers who add me on Skype. Not that I have anything against people personally, but I need to trust them since I will likely be paying first.

Use trade guardian. Takes a percentage but at least you won't get scammed. Doesn't mean the account won't be recovered or banned as soon as you get it. Any used game accounts are risky and I would recommend buying from well repped members. Make sure you've added them first or make them verify their identity through posting on threads or pm you.
