Homepage Update - Featured Threads

The homepage received a little update today. We have removed two of the four lists, "Most Active Forums" & "Forums with Recent Posts" and replaced them with featured threads.

  • Ten random threads from the Pro Seller usergroup will display on the homepage. [Pro Sellers only]
    • Only one thread per user will display at one time
  • Only threads that contain an image will display on the homepage, so if your thread has no image, I recommend adding one.
    • The first image in your thread will be used
  • Only recently active threads will display, threads that have activity in the last 14 days.
  • Features threads can be purchased by all usergroups. https://www.epicnpc.com/infocenter/advertising.html

We recommend all Pro Sellers update their threads so the image looks nice on the homepage. Some sellers have Skype buttons and other random images which look bad. Nicer looking threads will get more clicks, so make sure to update those images.

As always if you notice any bugs, please let me know.

I like how it looks and it's a nice addition to the home page.

But picking the first image does not seem like a good idea. Maybe make it so that the image has to be specified separately. A special tag, certain resolution or separate image upload in thread tools. Members will gradually fix their threads to contain a better image, but I doubt that we'll stop seeing occasional skype icons and other unwanted images.

People no longer have to search google for skype icons:

My 2 cents for what it is worth.

I like the idee but realy dislike the execution. This is poorly added to the site and looks like it is just droped in there to promote threads from paying members. As to beeing a part of the site. Why?

1. does not fit to the screen.
2. Images added most of the time look like crap.
2a. These sellers are no designers so why add a image? This makes the site ugly!
2b. Maybe if you want to add a image the idee from "The Integrity" seems allright. But make the images small and a fixed dimension. Maybe let pro sellers add a standard image (sig of some kind) to there profile page?
3. The "titles" from the thread are in most cases missing the essence of what they are selling because you cut of titles.

Added a image as i see the improvements that are possible.

like Zoefken said the titles do not really do justice in some cases so sellers should adjust their titles so they work right.
Like for instance right now ogedge has a thread displayed that says "world of warcraft legion" as most of displayed title. does not tell me what it is. Cd keys? Accounts? leveling?

I appreciate the feedback. Over time sellers will hopefully update their threads so they appear nicer looking, but perhaps we can make the images a standard default image with the option for sellers to change it. This will make all images look nice while allowing sellers to upload custom images if they want to.

As for why this is limited to Pro Sellers, this is done to provide an additional perk to this usergroup. It's been a while since this group has received any exclusive feature and I felt this was a perfect feature to limit to this group.

265x135 are the image dimensions and larger images will be resized. As long as your image is in this ratio, it will look good on the homepage without being stretched.

Thinking more about the image issue, if we created some sort of default image for each forum, this would be a massive amount of work for us. We have nearly 1000 forums, so we would have to create and add 1000 images to correct the issue, not to mention coding this new feature into the system.

Instead we will update the system so admins can add a custom image to a thread which will be used on the homepage, but will not display in the thread. This way we can easily fix threads with ugly images without changing the look of a seller's thread.

The titles have been extended to allow for 2 lines and we have decreased the font size to allow for more room.

Looks cool so far. Couple of things I'd like to mention.

1. Apart from the option to add a certain image on our main thread that will be shown on the homepage, you should also add an option to have a certain title thread that will show above the homepage picture. If the image will automatically take title thread, then it won't be as efficient as planned. E.g: one of my ttitle threads is "↪ Papa's PowerLeveling & Questing | Lootrights | Credits & items for sale" which works great because it's in the right forum and people are already looking for it if they browse to that specific forum. Therefor, if that title shows on the homepage, people won't know what it is for, making it less efficient than intended.

2. I had to refresh the page 16 times to find one of my threads there. I kept seeing "egpal" and other companies that have a large number of posts. I assume that the refresh rate is based on threads, not on the user itself. Since this is a tweak for ProSellers group and everyone should benefit, wouldn't be more fair to make the imagines refresh based on user, not on posts? So that if a user has 1 thread open and another has 20, both users will have one of their threads shown in the homepage.

Hopefully it was clear enough what I meant. :)

1. That's a good idea, we'll add forum title info to the post so it's easier to see what game the thread is for.

2. It's based on threads, not user, all threads appear the same amount, so if a user has more threads, they will have more threads in rotation. Perhaps we can add a limitation so that only 1 thread per user displays on each page refresh so it's a little more fair.

Is it possible to add SEO ( Search engine optimization ) services selling ? Would be great to have it. Maybe in social subforum.

Sure, I was planning on adding a few forums of that nature in one of our next forum updates. Look for it in our next update.

Great. Looking forward to see it.

PS: I know there's hide option on post. But You could consider adding second option to hide text / post for specific reputation points. I.e I want to sell an item / service only to peoples with 10+ reputation. Just a thought.

The front page looks like a dumpster fire. If I was new here I would have given up trying to find my desired section. Just my opinion.
