In terms of impersonating another user, Discord is by far the worst platform to use. It's very easy to make a fake account that perfectly matches someone's discord ID, including the number. As you can see below I was easily able to make a fake account to impersonate one of our sellers.

Due to this horrible flaw, we are banning the word "dis cord" on our site. Please remove it from your sigs and threads.

You can still exchange dis cord usernames, but only privately via direct message. You can no longer publicly post your dis cord username in threads, profile or sigs.

Posting channels was already not allowed before this change. It's considered advertising. People were trying to build up their channels by posting the server links here, so we don't allow that, sorry.

Dis cord Groups can easily abuse by kicking buyers out of servers and no evidences of trade are recorded.

I understand this is an issue. But are we holding peoples hands too much? I have dis cord impersonators that do not even pretend to use my actual dis cord? I have hidden mine on all my latest threads already because of complete spam of adds, but like my impostor warning thread people won't see my dis cord correctly in that thread now. I'm sure we shouldn't ban dis cord, like ~75-85% of people prefer use it nowadays. it's really hasty decision and i'm pretty sure all sellers will agree it.

I would love to think this would work, but most people don't read and don't check anything. We used to have a warning posted in multiple locations all over the site and we would still get multiple reports per day about the exact same thing the warning was about. Even when it's right in their face people would ignore it.

I agree, I don't like "child proofing" everything either, but dis cord is absolutely horrible. There should be no possible way for someone to create the EXACT same username as someone else, but on dis cord you can. Skype is also bad with the "display name" but at least you can easily check the "profile username" to see the real username.

Dis cord needs to fix this before we're going to remove his block. 99% of scam impersonations in the last 6 months are from Dis cord. Quite frankly we're also tired of dealing with this, so hopefully this will significantly lessen the amount of impersonation scams that occur here.

I can agree with this. 99% of sales and contacts are discord. We can just make warning to catch off buyers eye. It's not sellers fault. Also, EpicNPC not having alternative for chatting.

I disagree with this change. Almost every transaction I've made in the last two years was made via Disc and communication via EpicNPC PM falls short. I understand there is a risk, that's why Sythe is the cesspool it is.

For what it's worth, the very vendor you're using as your example (Misti) and someone who has a recent scam post because they were impersonated, even they disagree with this choice.

Yes , to contact me privately , means user have to register , while some dont want to register , they just shop around,also alot users adds me over night , when i am off , and once i get on we talk , as many users here do , noone is awake 24h.As extra thing, if there is no discord posted publicly, new users wont have chance to check who they speak with , therefore , they can be scammed on same way.This change is just making life harder to sellers , scammers will still be around and scam people , main thing is that scammed people are not checking threads or verifying before making trade,its not problem that discord is posted in public,its jsut lazyness of sellers / buyers to not verify twice to be sure whos legit and whos imposter.

He could do it by sending private message here before sending any goods.

If you add MistiServices#3381 manually - no way to meet imposter. But if someone add you - you must confirm indentity via site.

I remember a lot of scammers tried to do same tricks with skype, adding dot symbol in the end and such. Some people are just too lazy to care about their safety. Make big warning that you must contact user via private message here before starting any deal.

Without being able to check Discord for users offsite the risk of getting scammed will only get worse. Scammers will find out sellers Discord names one way or anther and will continue to take advantage of buyers while complicating business for sellers.

Perhaps you can add your own discord ID in the thread to like let your buyers check if its the real you, but a lot of people still don't know how to look up the discord ID especially new buyers.
So that only partially fixes the problem.

I will give my solution.. seller that want use discord tag on their profile, post or signature, must include their Discord ID, this discord ID is unique, so it's not possible to impersonator to copy it

maybe we can add the creation date of discord from discord id too on user profile or somehow epicnpc can add feature to search or lookup the discord id on here instead need to access this website

Leave everything like is now - no one here has to pay because someone did not want to think with a brain and not prevented to be scammed

personaly I always pending the transaction until moderator or admin help me verified things regarding my buyer before we complete the transaction, I always make sure everything on the track after received the payment, I record everything and even give the discount by partial refund for my patron after I know they are my old customer

and I prefer to cancel the deals than taking risk with someone that have history as scammer, no matter what the reason

how about adding about impersonator message and middleman information message on the website for new member/un-registered member? like the one that asked you to verify phone number

we can make it keep appear until they do upgrade or at least become member for 3 months, even if it's annoying for them, at least it will give some attention or awareness about this thing

I disagree with such action. Im one of the people who were impersonated, but even so this is still not the right way to look on the situation.

A scammer will always be a scammer, if he wants to scam he will always try to find a way to scam.

Thats beside you are only going to add more effort on sellers to sell their items, having to check the site each second to ensure fast response, and you are going to such approach without doing a notifaction system on epicnpc to get notified on your phone for every time you get a private msg.

Also i dont really like the idea that i have to put my buyers into the situation where they have to register an account on the site in order to be able to whisper me asking for my discord ID. That idea alone especially for users who dont like having to go through all the verification process on epicnpc in order to have an account seems alot of work.

When is about resolving a Discord issue the only way I can see is creating official EPICNPC Discord with Admin and Mods where would people join and be able to get more live information for whatever they need.

For example, there would be impossible to have two MistiService so impersonator would be instantly banned.

New members would be able to ask what they need in public or private and they would have mods to help them.

Also, there should be a rule if you are a member here and you post your Discord that you must to be a member of the group too.

I dont think banning discord is a good idea , will affect all sellers greatly on the site

people getting scammed by talking to the wrong person should be responsible most of the time if they dont do background checks to confirm

Creating an official Discord channel or account will not happen. We're not going to provide some sort of verification service by having to be on Discord all day. This is not logistically possible and creates more work for admins while providing little to no benefit for Epicnpc.

Maybe the solution has nothing to do with discord. The chat of the moment over the years has constantly changed. AOL, MSN, Skype and now Discord so in a few years it can be some other new chat that everyone switches to. Maybe what we need to do is make our own chat so easy and efficient to use, that their's no need for sellers to go offsite.

The biggest complains is buyers can't communicate without registering and don't want to go through the process.

This is a very difficult problem to tackle. Without registration it would allow scammers to contact members and spam our site very easily. Even if guests were extremely limited, for example, they can only sent 5 messages without registering, a scammer could easily use a bot to create 1000 guest accounts to mass spam.

I think the way forward is

1. Improve the current chat to make communication between seller's and multiple buyers very easy. (already planned for Dec 2019 or Jan 2020)
2. Once the chat is improved, I think we need to come up with a solution where potential buyers can register faster or possibly bypass registration so they can immediately start to communicate with the seller.

For now we'll keep it as it was and allow Discord usernames to be posted.

There is no perfect solution really. Buyers (both legit and not) want to connect to the seller asap and see if they can make a transaction.

I honestly think we (as in EpicNPC) should remove ourselves from anyone that wants to chat via Discord or any other chat service that we have ZERO control over. If buyers and sellers want to risk losing accounts/payments due to being fast and easy, then that is on them. Having a "warning" notice on the main page would be highly recommended when it comes to offsite communication.

I would promote our middleman service and improve our chat even harder and try to give both buyers and sellers more reason to use it. Legit people want to have safe transactions.

The bottom line is we cannot control everything. Or hold hands. Or suggest anything. The only thing we can control is the site itself.

I believe this is a bad idee. Instead their are methods to controle this.

You could write a bot that connects to a discord owned and managed by EpicNPC. Then get users to send the bot a message from the site to verify who they are. Then you have a secure way (or atleast as secure as possible). Then buyers and sellers can work on discord but only if they are verified threw the bot.

I believe it is never a way to just stop doing something because of misuse. There is a solution to every problem. You just need to find and execute it.

Can we have additional navigation about Info Center/Warning/News & Highlighted or Announcement/News In front of EpicNPC page. When anyone click on it, it will show everything you need to know about Scams.

The EpicNPC Info Center is kinda outdated. Even with Trade Guardian Section. There is no warning. We used the same one before big update.
There are 2 ways to reach "Know Scam" Section in Info Center.
- EpicNPC Navigation -> Forum Rules - > Buy/Seller guide -> Know Scam.
- EpicNPC Discussion -> EpicNPC New/Announcement -> Info Center Sub Thread -> Info Center link - > Buy/Seller guide -> Know Scam.

I doubt even with the longest seller/buyer here still confusing where to see those info. New Buyer/Seller rarely looking up Policy/ToS/Warning until something came up on them. At least , we can have a visible Warning so every time buyers/sellers confused if they are dealing with the real Seller/Buyer, they can acknowledge the situation faster.
I have been following those Discord Scam dispute. The most common way is Buyers/Sellers show their discord and Scammers will impersonate anyone who have high rep on EpicNPC even Middleman & Admin. Those Buyers/Sellers will either blindly to sell/buy for a fast deal or tired of verifying the real one on EpicNPC. Scammers can fake screenshot profiles as well.

Having an announcement section in front of EpicNPC Page or Info Center on Navigation Bar will greatly help. Thinking it's like a Banner Ad where almost 99% of people who visit forum will see it at first glance.

Edit: Navigation Bar can be tweak a bit. The Credit button seems a bit useless where you can put it together with Shop Section. Info still clear. A new Nav can be Announcement/Scam Warming/Etc that can catch everyone eye about Recent Scam methods.

See, THIS is a problem which EpicNPC should be focusing on. There are so many moderators yet finding anyone adequate or on moderation duty actively is a rarity; the most that this dumbass moderator has done the past month is post "" in threads and tell a $400+ yearly donor since 2014 to leave the site.
These hordes of moderators only cause regression of quality of services in the forum as they have an extra badge of trust for the customers leaving a false impression of security and quality.

This is how EpicNPC staff reached the conclusion:
We ban discord -> Less people get banned

Reality:
Ban Discord -> Buyers don't see Discords -> Buyers leave to other forums -> Sellers don't get sales -> Sellers move / focus on other forums

The problem is not that there's a problem, the problem is that there's an ideology which the staff is trying to pursue without understanding the implication of it.

I still find Sticky Thread by Admin himself could be a real solution to this mess. Every single sub-forum will have one sticky thread by admin for Recent Scams or Scam Prevention. Tittle like " Discord Impersonators Scam. Please read before dealing" or "IMPORTANT. Discord Impersonators Scam" etc... It doesn't have to be every single forum but a requested sub-forum, some Popular sub-forum that Mods or members can request.

Admin thread can have a purple highlight so it would be stand out as Admin notice.

that's a good thing, but on some cases, the impersonator find their target on other forum, and then they impersonate from epicnpc, and they just give out the post url, meanwhile the victim not browse the forum at all or not even register here, they just saw the post and profile and just decide to believe on it..

so I suggest the messages that stay on the top whenever the user not registered or still new member, like the message if you are just register but not yet verified the phone number

the message should warn the visitor or new member about impersonator and remind them to private message the seller / MM first on here before do the transaction, either send the payment or sending the account

and this should appear anywhere when people visit epicnpc if they are still new member or not registered as user

it may make the website looks ugly, but I believe with big warning like that, we can prevent impersonator

See, THIS is a problem which EpicNPC should be focusing on. There are so many moderators yet finding anyone adequate or on moderation duty actively is a rarity; the most that this dumbass moderator has done the past month is post "" in threads and tell a $400+ yearly donor since 2014 to leave the site.
These hordes of moderators only cause regression of quality of services in the forum as they have an extra badge of trust for the customers leaving a false impression of security and quality.



Nobody's working with anything here, lets be real now! This rule change is the dumbest thing that I've ever seen on any forum ever, period.
You don't need to be some monstrous think tank to further from the first step of the concept.

This is how EpicNPC staff reached the conclusion:
We ban discord -> Less people get banned

Reality:
Ban Discord -> Buyers don't see Discords -> Buyers leave to other forums -> Sellers don't get sales -> Sellers move / focus on other forums

The problem is not that there's a problem, the problem is that there's an ideology which the staff is trying to pursue without understanding the implication of it.

All that you have to do is make it somewhere copy on click( to make it even extra foolproof) while still being selectable to copy and then whoever still decides to not click nor copy then they're stupid and deserve to be scammed.
This can be as a widget for the thread or a button in the left avatar block like in epvp.

Seems like Mr.Fox only cares about sales (even though it doesn't seem like you get many) and not showing any sense of sympathy when other users had been scammed.

Not sure why you're so worked up about banning Discord, although the ban had been removed already.

There's no "embarrassing" solution, you don't know the result if you haven't tried the solution. You are presuming that it wont work because you are only self interested and only care about sales. You fear the loss of sales.

You don't see the bigger picture here.

When users get scammed, they are fearful of making another transaction, so IF you care about sales so much, I hope you can see the correlation between scams and sales.

I doubt he if he got a lot of returning customer if judging by his attitude and way of thinking, his feedback already reflect it

and if he really tired with this forum rules, he can just leave rather than complaining like kid, remember we are just user and using this marketplace, we need to follow the rules

Sticky Thread would be instant and hotfix for impersonators problem, at least for EpicNPC members. Most of recent scams are target directly at EpicNPC members. For offsite victim, they need to be aware before even register like a banner ad pop up in front of their face when they visit EpicNpc for the first time.

I find a lot of my offsite clients still read sticky threads and follow the advice, so if there’s a chance to make people more informed this way, we should do it, worth a shot.
