Email Phishing Scam
This scam is done by finding your email that you put as your contact and sending you an email to you saying that you need to confirm your account because it is suspected of trading or being sold. There are a lot of different emails out there. Some are just text, some are pictures that look legit because of a background.
Remember: World of Warcraft will never ask for your password.
They may also send you an email asking you to confirm your account by going to a login page. Most likely if you look at the url it will be on a free hosting site and it is just a way to log your account name and password.
The "middle man"
On an occasion there are a few scammers out there that have friends that help them. They will talk to you like a legit trader and then suggest using a middle man that has "high reputation."
Make sure that the middle man is the person that they claim to be. Watch out for the I being an l(lower case L) and other things like that.
Here they will say that both of you give account info to the middle man then the 2 scammers just block you once you give your information to the middle man.
Written Agreement Form
This isn't very widely used but I believe I have seen it on a few other sites as ways people have been scammed. It starts off as a smooth trade and the trader suggests using a written agreement. Saying he just downloaded this pre made pdf form and all you have to do is download it, print it, sign it, then scan it and send it back to him. After you download this he will tell you that he doesn't want to trade anymore.
However, you just really downloaded a trojan or a keylogger and he is getting all your account information and more.
Paypal Reversal
If you are selling your account be very careful and only sell to paypal verified users. If they are not you can wait to sell it to the next buyer.
This scam involves the scammer telling paypal that his paypal account was hacked and that he was unaware of the purchase.
If this happens to you try to give them enough proof so that they will side with you. Make sure that you mention that the item you sold was a virtual item and that their policy does not cover virtual items. Maybe if you show enough solid proof they will side with you instead.
Claiming that the email was changed
Alot of people have found ways to edit websites before they take the screenshot. Every time you get the email changed make sure you confirm that it is done. Goto your email. Log into the account and check it. Change the password so you have to use the correct email. Anything like that will help make sure you are really in control of the email.
Account name last
Make sure you never give the account name last. On the password recovery page there is also a forgotten account name link. If you give them all the info but the account name they can still get it. Make sure you never give the account name last due to the fact that they can give you fake info all up until the end and as soon as you both are about to change the account name he says no thank you because he already has it and you probably have fake information.
Fake Renters
There are alot of people out there that will pretend to be renters just to get your account. They will either take it and rent it to a real company and get free money or a free powerleveling job while you dont get anything.
To prevent this... don't rent to anyone.
I am sure there are more scams and if you have any other ideas on how to prevent something please post them because I think the best way to prevent getting scammed is to know what a scammer will do.
