Chat box issues

There has been issues with the chat box and it seems that members have different opinions on how the chat box is monitored. I am thinking that the Admins/mods need to get together and make some guidelines/rules on how things should regulated with that chat box.

- Break down of what is and is not spam is needed.
- It will help members have something written down to refer to when using the chat box.
- Less separation in how mods run the chat box, so that the flow is smoother.

I know some people will not listen to the guidelines or rules but something in place can be effective on the community.

I am not trying to attack anybody in this opinion, just think it needs some improvement and stability.

Constructive ideas are more then welcome.

I've brought this topic up to MANY of the mods already and it has been met pretty well.

What I would like to see implemented:

Not Allowed:

1) Any post that is a "roll face" post, is considering spamming. Ex: asaiarnebarb arenroinerb <-- This is spam. (regardless if multiple posts) the fact that there is no reason to have it in chatbox means it shouldn't be allowed.

2) Multiple posts - Clarification, multi-posting of the SAME thing, such as "WTS: HARD EGGS" then another post saying SAME THING. This shouldn't be allowed.

3) Insults, Slandering, Racist Comments, Or Childish Behavior - Self explanatory. A little trolling here or there is welcomed, but going over bored should not be allowed.

4) Posting more then 4 Lines of text (When doing Ads) - We are only allowed to have 3 threads bumped on first page of the forums, so 3 posts in chatbox should be allowed, 4 is to much as there is no reason to have that many at one time.

5) Posting without a thread open (When Doing ads) - If your advertising what your selling, why would you not have a thread open on it and link the thread in your ad? Should not be allowed!

6) Posting while still being able to see previous (When doing Ads) - This should not be allowed as people can still see your previous post, what good is it to have it up there a second time? The chatbox has a scroll function, if you posted and it scrolls off the main portion and you cannot see it anymore then by all means post again. If the site has heavy traffic (people chatting in chatbox) limit your posting it again to when you cannot see it at all when scrolling all the way to the bottom. Have some respect for others.

Allowed:

1) Posting up to 3 lines of advertisements for things your selling as long as it has a LINK to a thread of that SAME item.
2) Chatting - Keep it clean, kind, and it should make since (No face roll posting)
3) Posting during heavy traffic times, wait till it rolls completely out of chatbox. Non-heavy times, wait till it rolls off main area to post again.
4) If you see a post and you want to inquire about said post, Goto the link provided in the chatbox and get the persons skype / aim. Keep transactions out of chatbox.

Lastly: Be Nice and Respectful, Simple as that. Keep trolling to a Minimum

That is just my 2 cents. As I have said, I've communicated this with a couple of the other moderators and they seem to welcome this and said they would pass my ideas up to Mike. If it hasn't happened, oh well, here it is now.

The mods are overdoing it. I believe it should be left alone unless directly brought to their attention. They are claiming 2 lines is spam. Its not harming anyone.

I'm glad they want to do their jobs, but its getting out of hand. We rarely have spam issues other than ones the mods are creating.

I agree with you Commie, those are some great ideas for them to go by. Kamehameha I can see why members see that it is over doing it but yet you have to think there is nothing to go by and every admin/mod have different opinion on how it should be regulated (even members), which can get confusing for everyone. They are trying to do there job, which is a good thing as you pointed out. Yet I can see the frustration of members not knowing what can/can not be done in the chat box. i just think overall clarification will help the over all outlook.

They need clearer guidelines to follow, Simple as that.

I feel like spelling and grammar should be a must. Regardless of what you guys "decide to tweek", The community will always have more sway.

*I* made the comment about how I don't like what Commie does with 3 lines. The first time I said it I said "This is my opinion" which I reiterated again when you all turned on me.

I never said it was spam. I never warned him about the spam. I never said he should stop. I said it felt spammy to me.

So please do not attribute my comments, that I made sure were followed by a disclaimer about them being my opinions, as mods making a "ruling" because that was not what happened at all.

Edit :

If the chatbox isn't for talking about things, that's fine. If the ruling is we only want to use it for ads, I will have no problem with that.

But I don't see the problem in the simple comment I made about 3 lines feeling spammy. It does. It's a large percentage of active messages. It has nothing to do with me being a mod and trying to enforce anything (that may or may not even exist) or trying to force my opinions on anyone else. It was just my opinion and I expressed it.

Everyone got all up in arms over my expressed opinion and ended up making it a much bigger deal than it ever was.

Sakura, im not sure what medications you are on to think you are the center of the universe. This topic WAS NOT about you, it was a generalization of the things that have happened over the past 2 days. Dragging me into your petty game and making it look like im the bad guy or the others is childish and not "moderator" like. Nobody in this thread even brought up the "opinions"" you voiced. Remember my statement in the chatbox about when we "the members" voice our opinions we get "****" on, well sakura... Quit dropping your trousers on this topic.

I never directly said anything about you. That same 2 line spam thing applies to a couple other mods as well... -_-

We'll discuss this in the mod forums and come up with some general guidelines.

When I first implemented the chat box I did it with the intention of leaving it mostly unregulated, with the exception of extreme spamming or cursing, flaming, etc. I also didn't realize people would be using it to buy/sell/trade, I thought it was going to be used for general chatting, but it seems it's a pretty good tool for selling with about 2/3 of the posts being that type.

Since the chat moves fairly quickly, it's makes it hard to moderate unless a mod is actively chatting, so we rely on members reporting violators and I think for the most part it's been working out well. I personally don't want to sit there watching the chat all day and I'm not going to ask mods to do that either.

Some people want more rules, I'm the type of person that likes less, so I only add them if I really feel they're needed. However this seems to be one of those cased where they're needed since it's causing some issues. The mods and I will come up with some general rules that members can use to report violators and hopefully that will resolve some of these issue.

Splendid. I think I speak for the whole community when I say we are tired of mods posting every couple of lines telling someone to stop spamming, it adds to the spam more so than the offender.
