Let's see...take all things into account....
XYZ spends hours and hours in game building characters and reputation. They level and farm day and night. They obtain the levels, gil, items, etc. that they wanted and get tired of the game. So, they sell their items, gil, account, etc.
ABC has a good job where they make enough money that they have a few hundred to spare for entertainment. ABC buys XYZ's items, gil, etc. ABC has the opportunity to enjoy the game without the frustration of hours of farming. Because they have better items, they are able to level faster and thus does not tire of the game as quickly.
Who is to say that ABC wasted money? After all, in this era time is money. XYZ might have been better off working in some local retail store and could possibly have made more money faster.
Either way, ABC and XYZ are happy. And if money or time can buy you a bit of that happiness, who's to say it was a waste?
