If you're selling something through western union you are 100% safe, however, if you were to buy something through western union once the seller picks up the money at the local western union there is no way to get your money back. So he/she could easily scam you. If you are the seller and you know you are a legitimate seller it might be hard to convince a buyer to use Western Union because of the safety risks. I would recommend having some sort of proof that you are a legitimate seller before requesting you want to collect funds using Western Union.

so if I'm a buyer, splitting the payment in two and asking for the account name/password, then the second payment, with the seller assisting me with forwarding the emails so I can change the password, would be a good idea on my part?

Personally, it would be smarter to use a middle man if you were to use WU. Its just not a safe way to buy intangible goods online, if something goes wrong its not like a credit card and you cannot charge it back. Everything you send is final, while the person with the virtual goods (the account) can at any moment in the next year or two take his account back. Even if you've transfered the character off the account a month from now he can take it back and you'll never see your money or your character again.

Like zero said, there is no guarantee in the exchange of virtual accounts. Splitting the payment in two is a tad bit expensive since WU takes like, what, $20 every time you send?
