I attempted to purchase a Warcraft account over Craigslist and was defrauded by the seller. I have compiled a substantial paper trail of his fraud (which Paypal was not interested in seeing) and know exactly who he is. If anyone has experience reporting fraud crimes to IC3, I would like to speak with you.

What was the accounts estimated worth? If it wasn't over a grand, then it's a complete waste of time in my opinion.

I don't really want to tell you not to fall through. But IC3, I doubt, will look into something like that. Even more so if it's not a scammer on their radar. (Like, just a small one).

Ace Logan knows a bit about this stuff, he could maybe help you. Search him on the forums, he's one of the admins.

In my opinion, no matter the amount it's worth reporting. A lot of scammers will go for "small" transactions in the hopes that they will not get reported. BUT, the FBI will go after those that have the most evidence and have the highest chance of conviction.

So one scammer who stole $10,000 but has little known information about vs, another scammer who stole 20 accounts at $200 but has a ton of known information about is more likely to be looked into at first at it's the easiest conviction.

The FBI won't look into fraud in the virtual merchandise market. It's simply just too ridiculous, they have bigger problems to handle.

The amount of money lost in this situation will be irrelevant to IC3. Even if it was $1000, I doubt IC3 would look into it, it is not a substantial enough amount of money to be worth tracking someone down.

Besides, the time and money spent trying to get this guy in court would eventually exceed the money you lost by far. It's simply not even worth it.

Moral of the story, you can report him, it will do nothing, scammer wins in the end. In your future prospects to dealing with people in the online market, be more careful and make sure you properly evaluate the person you are dealing with.

Sorry for your losses.

I have to disagree with you, based on conversations I've had with two FBI agents. They will treat it like any other fraud case, not a virtual items getting stolen case. Reporting these cases WILL help.

O Rly? I think not. Think of the countless accounts being stolen day by day. I'm sure if the FBI gave a damn they would atleast peek into this situation concerning stolen virtual merchandise, considering these accounts are worth hundreds of dollars, some in the thousands.

Of all the scammers reported how many have been prosecuted? NONE. How many have faced a judge for stealing an account? NONE. How many have had hand cuffs slapped on their wrists for stripping your toon and taking all the gold? NONE.

I'd like to see the day that a judge would say, "I am sentencing you to 15 years of prison time for scamming a Level 70 Priest."

You see how ridiculous that sounds?

I'm not saying dont report the scammer to IC3. I'm saying it will essentially do nothing for you. Maybe when the day comes that there have been a substantial amount of reports on the SAME guy scamming for over $10k then it might catch the FBI's attention. But as far as your concern wanting justice done because this guy took your $200 account, you can say goodbye to your cash.

I hope all of you new MD members take this as a warning with dealing in the online market. Be cautious with who you deal with. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are afraid to get scammed, this is not the place for you.
