The Risk of Buying Gold

I've tried searching the forums as well as the FAQs, but I'm looking for a more personal response from those who deal with gold selling/buying on a daily basis. There have been rumors flowing both ways: that Blizzard only targets gold sellers when banning accounts, and others that claim they target both. I've heard people say that it wouldn't make sense for Blizzard to ban you just for recieving a mail with gold in it simply because it isn't a solid basis for action. Someone could try to get you banned by sending you 1000 gold with a like, "Thanks for your purchase to IGE!"

My questions to you, the experts, go as follows:

1) How frequently do gold buyers get banned? Has it happened to any of your accounts?

2) Does the quantity of gold bought/recieved make a difference in security?

3) Is using a direct trade more secure than sending through mail?

Thanks in advance for helping me find a more definite answer to these questions. I figure if I'll find an accurate answer from anywhere, it'll be here.

Blizzard also runs a program with WoW that was implemented to monitor people running programs that can be used to auto level/farm etc. However, Blizzard also uses this to monitor websites you access and emails that you read while playing. So don't go on any account trading sites or open/send emails to people that work for those sites while playing WoW.

As for how frequently gold buyers are banned, I can not say. I bought gold once, but that was a long time ago and I assume security wasn't as tight. Quantity of gold being sent may be a red flag. Perhaps try auctioning an item like a stack of mageweave for several k, and have them purchase it. Then have them send you a mail begging for their gold back. That seems pretty legit.

All in all its a risk and when you look at it, the gold is usually not that important for anything. Its nice to have, but you don't need an epic flying mount or tradeskills to be able to raid or pvp. </div></div>
