Many of you may have experienced this horrible sensation but shrugged it off at one point and lost the memory in time. On the other hand, many of you may be like me, sitting up at 3:30AM because after the off-chance of going through two rounds of sleep paralysis, I'm too terrified and unnerved to try again.

Firstly, it's hard to explain this sensation as it's unique to many people. Some people hallucinate and visualize terrifying things such as demons, aliens, or even creatures. I personally have yet to see things on this magnitude, although I've experienced similar hallucinations.

I'll give you a vivid description of what exactly happens to me:

Scenario 1:

I'm very tired. I am just at that point where your eyes get heavy and you really feel like you are just going to melt into sleep rather than the conventional night of sleep where you sit in bed for about 10 minutes and then kick off. I can feel my eyes roll back into my head and even begin to hear voices and see bleak images while my eyes are closed. This usually is proceeded with a *red* sort of tint entering what I see in this dreamlike scenario. Once that entire image is covered in red, I feel a rumbling - almost like a plane taking off with a similar sound - in my ears. I force my eyes to open, and at last I'm sitting there in bed frantically scanning my room. On the odd occasion, I'll see a shadowy figure; however, I have read of hallucinations that would even terrify people who don't experience this sensation. However, all while doing this, you come to the incredibly terrifying realization that you cannot move or speak. Now when I say "move" or "speak," I mean pretty much trying to focus every ounce of my body towards lashing out in any way possible and screaming my lungs out. Instead, for about ten seconds, which seems like a lifetime, you're paralyzed short of being able to move your eyes and possibly even your mouth as you try to make out some sort of scream for help. I'm not entirely sure, but it may even be a slight case of sleep apnea where my breathing had stopped and for that reason I was not able to scream. But that never came to thought before when I experience it.

Scenario 2:

This situation is very similar to scenario 1, but with a slight difference in the trigger. Like tonight, I was able to get to sleep normally until I woke up to an alarm system going off a few miles off my house. About ten minutes after that, I was able to get back to sleep and had a dream in which I was in a warehouse (I guess it was related to the alarm) where I was frantically chasing someone around with another person at my side. At the end of the dream, I finally reach that person and surround them with my companion, only to find out as the person turns around, it was me. Now when you see yourself in your dream in the first-person point-of-view, usually you just get startled and wake up. Sometimes, this type of stuff triggers my experience which makes it all-the-more frightening. Other times, it may be that I picked up a piece of paper in my dream and tried to read it, and all of a sudden I go through the rumbling, "red" tint - almost like blood, force of wake-up, and inability to move.

On a historical side, it seems that people have felt this for several centuries. The earlier occurrences were contributed to "demons" sitting on people to force the inability to move. I personally make it out to be a supernatural experience many times it occurs. It honestly feels like someone is possessing you and you're being kicked out of your own body - like your soul is being ripped out and then finally put back in to control once more.

Now, I'm interested in hearing from you... have you ever had a similar experience? Felt something strange or saw something abnormal? Please share if you'd like as I personally believe that after reading several other stories across the web, I get a better personal understanding of my own condition.

the worst experience i've ever had from a dream was the feeling of falling, nothing like this.

I doubt they would help but have you tried sleeping pills or something?

It happens too infrequently to require medication. Apparently, marijuana is a form of "cure" for this - I guess because it relaxes the body and is a stress relief which is said to be a trigger for an episode. I'm just too reluctant to ever try it let alone smoke anything xD.

The old hag. It happens to me every so once in awhile, probably like twice a month. Usually occurs if i had a bad day or was just depressed. Kinda weird how our stories are similar though with the shadow figures. When im experiencing the paralysis, i ALWAYS see a shadowy figure with like a thin red silk cape vanish into the darkness and of course the sound of an earthquake in my eardrum. I used to read up on this a couple years ago when i was concerned, if you take naps, DON'T! Irregular sleeping schedules will haunt you(lol literally). Also on a good note, it could lead you to lucid dreaming!

I experience a similar night terror about once or twice a month as well. Usually when it happens my girlfriend wakes me up because I scream to the best of my ability in my asleep (very muffled screams because I feel like I am paralyzed). Usually the dream involves me laying in my bed unable to move and it looks as though a shadow figure is slowly creeping its way toward me and there is nothing I can do to stop it. However, one time in specific I remember being in my computer chair with it spinning in circles very slowly and every time it was at a certain point to where I would be able to see the shadowy figure (couldn't move my neck to see it all the time because I was paralyzed) it would be closer and closer each time. I HATE those dreams soooo much.

I've had similar dreams , just none of the "paralysis" elements. But mainly the only dreams that annoy me are the ones where I'm falling... As those tend to happen when I'm sleeping with my legs stretched out like a bridge (as in my torso is on my bed but my legs are on a chair with a gap between the bed and itself.) , and right as I'm about to fall asleep my body thinks I'm falling and start shaking or something , and the movements wake me up.

But are you sure it's not just a dream inside a dream? I once dream't I was going to sleep and actually had a dream while I was dreaming...

It's always real you wake up and cannot move from your body's natural paralysis during REM or right before dreaming occurs. You can see you're awake just not move.

It is not always real for me, in fact I believe that it is never real since I get woken up when it happens an I am not already awake.

You definitely know its real when you hear yourself breathing at a fast rate and have full control of your mind but can't do anything. Just looking at the room around you KNOWING you're helpless lol. From what i actually read, its hereditary, and my mother actually had the same problem when she was a teenager.

I feel the need to comment because whilst I havent had them as bad as you guys, i've had similar ones, usually the random falling ones. But I do occasionally get dreams where I can see myself in the third person, and all i can control is my eyes.

Oh and for the record, thedunbay and kuz's avatars are awesome

Haha. I think Kuz sped up his avatar a little bit. I think it keeps you from being mesmerized now O.o.

I'm not sure if it's hereditary, why I sometimes have episodes, or any medical conclusion of it. I just figure it's a pretty "normal" occurrence in terms of your body is doing what it normally does but you just happened to wake up at the wrong time or you're too stressed to sleep correctly.

Night terror - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia a great incite of people all over the world and their cultures explanations of night terrors.

A modern example of religion giving us answers they didn't really know and us finding out later with science that they were just giving us words with nothing but faith to back it up... I used to believe they were actual evil spirits, thanks to my mormon mother lol.

so what are u guys on and how can i get some? sounds to me like u fools need to sleap more maybe stop jerkin it eating hot pockets till 5 am playin mmo's

Do you guys ever relax before going to sleep? If you don't maybe you should try that, before going to sleep take 5-10 minutes and read a book and take some deep breath, change your usual pre-sleep habits, maybe you will see an improvement in the quality of your sleep. I tend to get very poor sleep when I go to bed over excited.

1. I have never, and don't intend to use any drugs my doctor has not prescribed me.
2. I tend to sleep routinely around 12AM, maybe 3AM if I'm out.
3. I hate hot pockets.
4. I haven't touched an MMO in probably around a year.
5. What you crudely mentioned, which I will not repeat, is geared for relaxation - not inducing a stress-oriented occurrence in my description.

I would ask that you read up on your literature before you post something as ignorant as that because it truly doesn't help your reputation.

After lights are out and I'm ready to go to bed, I usually sit in my bed and do some meditative thinking and relaxation. I used to have very bad sleep insomnia when I was a child and had to see a sleep professional to see if there were any habits that could be changed to allow me to sleep again. The best tip I've ever gotten was that: "Bed is for Sleep and Sex only."

He told me that interfering with your body's definition of what it means to "go to bed" includes, but isn't limited to: playing on the computer, doing homework, watching tv, etc. etc. So if you are having trouble sleeping; first and foremost, make sure you train your body to understand that bed literally equals "sleep or sex."

So on a completely unrelated note, I noticed you said that marijuana is considered a "cure" for it but you're worried about trying it. Despite all of the 'getting high' blah blah blah, it actually has some pretty amazing medical abilities and you should consider it! I totally sound like a stoner right now, but last year I was completely against it and once trying it I changed my mind. I went though a process with a very painful thing called TMJ - basically the plates in my jaw didnt line up, and every time I opened my mouth my jaw felt like it had to pop open to widen my mouth. Eventually we fixed it, but once I got my wisdom teeth removed they knocked me out and opened my mouth the wrong way so when I woke up I was just in intense and terrible pain.

Although I was given a lot of pain medicine, one thing that was awful was that although it helped the pain is it just made me absolutely sick to my stomach. I found that smoking completely and literally cured this - if I took a few hits before taking my medicine, I wouldn't get sick. And nausea is only one of the things it helps with - my friend had that exact issue that you're speaking of and it got so bad she was afraid of going to sleep. She started smoking, generally before falling asleep, and since then has not had one single issue. The thing about it is that it just gets rid of every stress related issue you're upset about and allows you to enjoy the humor and details you never would've seen before (why do you think potheads are always laughing all the time? haha) It also is great for helping you fall asleep and stay asleep (and gives you peaceful dreams! from my experience anyways)

I feel as if our world is finally starting to see the redeeming qualities in marijuana. Despite what you may hear, there are literally no permanent negative side effects (as proven by a scientist at Harvard). You can't even overdose from it, so in my opinion it makes no sense to me that it's illegal and alcohol isn't. It really is something that you should consider trying, I don't smoke often (maybe once a month) and i'm not some huge pot advocate but I honestly do think it could do wonders for you and the problems that you're having

tl;dr - smoke weed!

I rather not get dishonorably discharged and/or arrested. Thanks though.

It's actually decriminalized in many states assuming it's being used for medical purposes.

[edit] Although to be fair you are correct; in many work forces it's still frowned upon. My mom has diabetes (which makes her eligible) but because she works for the Navy she doesn't want to get a license.

Doesn't matter anyway because in MY state it is not legal and even if it was just like I don't smoke nor drink. Although I might drink a little when out and about with friends. Not a fan of smoking weed though, even if it's to relax... I have only been high in my entire life about... twice.

While I understand what you're saying, it's not the fact that it's a drug or it's illegal that makes me against it. I may not have said it in this thread, but I really don't mind people smoking marijuana or doing whatever they want to do so long as it doesn't interfere with another person in a negative way. For me, personally, I don't like the smell of it, the fact that you have to smoke it, and the headaches I get everytime I smell cigarette smoke, cigar smoke, and even places where people smoke weed.

On another note, I've been actually researching this a little deeper and found out that this could be a "gateway" to lucid dreaming. It seems interesting but I'm trying to see if I can induce one of these dreams since apparently they're unbelievable in terms of what you can do in your own "dreamscape." The best way I can relate it is Neo finding out he's in a Matrix and he now has the ability to fly, fight better than everyone, and dodge bullets. If you become "lucid," or aware that you are dreaming, you enter a sort of conscious dream in which you can do anything you want at your own will - but you're still sleeping.

I've actually experienced those before. One morning I happened to realize I had some sort of a conscious during my dream and was able to control myself. Looked it up- and behold, lucid dreaming it was :P Of course this happened to be a few days after I had just seen inception as well (which made it even weirder). Never have I had this "sleep paralysis" that you have described though. These dreams were probably some of the coolest things I've ever experienced. What was said above is correct, you actually gain a conscious in your dream and are able to physically act. For me at least, I was contained in one area and unable to leave it...almost like there was no other existing space in my "dream world"- definitely a very interesting topic.

Some scary **** right there TJP , most weird thing ive ever dreamt about is falling and then suddenly waking up to allmost falling out of the bed because you get kinda shocked in a way that makes you respond when you wake up.

Have happened a few times.

Their is actually a word for this in Korean. If I remember correctly, koreans believe this only happens because some sort of evil entity is holding you down. I've had it happen to my friends a couple times. One of my friends got so freaked out by it he threw out everything bad he had in his house (probably thousands of dollars worth of movies, video games, and music cds). I can't imagine an experience so horrible that it would cause you to do this.
