Seller Verification Changes - Postponed

KYC is required for many types of businesses. It is the reason we were declined from payment providers like Skrill, Wise, Payoneer and others. This change diminishes any risk of being non-KYC complaint and allows us to reapply to those payment providers, hopefully adding many new payment options for members.

You either want this to be a forum or you don't.

Every recent change you've made this site has been terrible and aims to undo anything "forum" about it. If you want a marketplace where sellers sell stuff and you skim off their profits, just go make one. Taking away everything that makes EpicNPC special and gives its users value just to make this site into another PlayerAuctions / G 2 G with a KYC requirement on top will surely win you lots of sellers and not backfire at all.

I think it's time we all took a deep breath and stopped blaming each other. Let's remember that there might be legal reasons or business needs behind Mike's decision to consider making our forum KYC compliant. There could be a variety of reasons for this move, and Mike has already mentioned that the decision is on hold while he listens to what we have to say.

We all value this forum and have played a part in keeping it alive and buzzing. I want to make it clear that I'm not exactly thrilled about the KYC requirement either. I believe our forum should remain a place where users can freely interact without such regulations. However, we shouldn't forget that Mike is managing a community of over a million with just three employees. Handling integrations, updates, and a wide range of requests from so many members is a massive challenge.

I've seen many discussions in the past where members asked for more payment options, and it's been an ongoing issue. This might be one of the reasons Mike is considering this change.

Let's keep the conversation constructive and try to understand the challenges of managing such a large community. Your feedback is crucial, so let's make sure it's heard in a way that helps us all move forward together.

Yeah, I agree. I think we've gone too far without knowing why Mike wants to make this change. I believe he's more concerned about keeping the website running than just making more money from it.

he wants to make that change cause he wants ti change epicnpc to be new g 2 g or something similar. Its all about profit , hes business owner, ofc he wants make profit of this, every recent change was about that, he just knows if he changes epic from forum to markeplace people will leave, there is 10 sites who do it and each one is garbage. Pretending that forums owners care about people and not profit is wrong thing to assume.

2nd thing, if he wants make marketplace , he needs get rid of feedback as it is now. Marketplaces dont want people share negative reviews about sellers, they keep good reviews up and bad ones usually never appear.

On the end is all about what this will be on the end , marketplace or forum as it is now.
Changes hes adding are his own ideas, noone asked for any of those.website was fine 4 years ago without changes, now feels like minefield where random rules are added , words are censored , warnings are sent left and right for random reasons, site assumes sellers are selling botted gold and buyers should know that everyone who sells here is selling shady goods, trade guardian is forced to be used even tho is broken system. No real insurance for anyone who use it.

And now trying to sneak in KYC so site can use wise or payoneer… if admins know anything , they should know that payoneer is not gaming friendly, same as wise.and skrill is used by 1% community here.

Let me clear up a few things here. Some of the recent changes are actually the mods ideas and not Mikes. Some of the ideas even went against what Mike wanted to do.

As far as profit is concerned, I image they are already well off. Not every change is profit driven as you claim. Some are and some are changes that the mods decided.

Discord mainly when people could use other languages to copy other user's username was absolute trash to deal with. Which is mainly why there are warnings and the reason for the Trade Guardian push to begin with.

Any website that gives "insurance" using their system is a scam and will create a bias towards whatever will favor the website. This also opens multiple avenues for scammers to manipulate the system.

If he was trying to sneak KYC in the site he would have pushed this change with no announcement.

Then mods are without basic trading knowledge. No mod is doing more trades than real sellers here, sellers are ones who bring profit and jobs not mods or anyone else. If 95% sellers are against changes , then changes are bad, and last 10 changes were without sellers approval. Claims that KYC is so site can use trash payment methods are so thin, if this change passes by, then next one is ban of discord and website links in posts, move which will force sellers to sell only using tg and het payments on wise or payoneer. I am sure that was discussed in mods chat at some point, multiple people brought that subject here on this post.

Last change when discord was banned, shows how much mods / admins understand how market works.

Same applies for not allowing discord links in threads, we are forced ti have 2-3 discord accounts instead having one discord link and letting customers join there for trades. Anything against that option is absolutely absurd.

Insurance is scam, but site trying to force people use something which gives false feeling of having insurance. And then punish sellers for using it when stiff goes downhill.

Not every change here is to please the seller. We have to weight out the pro's and con's of every change that we decide on whether it is a mod that recommended the change or an admin. There is more to decide on then just if the sellers are going to be happy with a change. Some of the things that have to be discussed are legal concerns, scam concerns, how it will affect the user's, and many other factors. Some changes might have more con's than pro's which is mostly in the cases of legal issues.

While this change is small this is an example of such a change. We used to have credits that could be traded. However, we can't do that due to legal issues surrounding the trade of credits. This is mostly a negative change but there is no way around it as it stands as it presents a legal issue.

Discord was banned due to how easy it was to impersonate users. While the new username change on discord resolved part of the issue it still did not resolve the server scam issues. If you need me to explain that scam and why it is an issue I can PM it to you so you see the issue. I still agree that discord was more of an issue prior to the username change and is not as much of an issue now. However, servers are still a large issue as it has a very easy scam tactic to it that would leave any user that was scammed by it zero evidence to give us.

Trade Guardian has only been promoted as way to ensure a transaction completes as majority of scams occur when one party delivers the item/money and the other person ghosts. We do not promote it as anything more.

Everything said here shows whats wrong on this site. On the end, admins needs to decide, will this be money making site, or friendly site to everyone. There is no middle ground.

And yet you are still here, you still use the site and make profit from the site. If you don't like something you are free to go somewhere else, as no one is making you stay.

Mike has postpone this as he is listening to the sellers / buyers and not just saying F you and do what he likes.

Frankly he does not have to tell us anything if he wants to change something he can, and you deal with it or you leave.

Ofc i do , and i will keep doing it as everyone else, cause i like how epicnpc works right now, i dont want it to be just one more marketplace, but i dedicate time on posts like this one to express my opinion and to try make site better as much possible. I know i dont have much impact on decision making, and i am ok with that, but i have saw what happend to place which did opposite of what is done here ( they did too less, compared to epicnpc who tries too much ) , and that site is ruin now of what is used to be.

Also buyers are aware of marketplaces like g 2 g , pa or z2u, but they choose to use epicnopc cause they like how sellers act here, noone of sellers here treats buyers as numbers, we treat them as friends. I met few people here in 2013 and they still buy of me, i know their rl problems, i help them when they are short on money, when someone needs boost ,or gold, i deliver it, i dont ask if they pay now or ever.

Such things u dont have on big marketplaces, thats why people prefer epicnpc, cause most sellers care about people who buy here. Ofc here are scammers, and shady people, some do exit scams and some stop paying workers, but overall , 95% of sellers have same buyers for years. And those legit sellers, are reason why epicnpc is what is now. Mods also used to be part of that process. But they are not anymore ,not cause they are bad, its just rules who prevents them helping others, its quite sad when user comes here, asks for help and gets message sorry you havent paid us for help, we will close issue and u can give negative feedback..I agree that noone should spend time on solving disputes for free, but if some people want to do that, let them solve those disputes, even if takes more time, that can help site, wont harm anyone here if someone gets help for free.. But that is another topic..

I dont have any issue with any KYC but im totally against changing Epicnpc from a forum to marketplace i think that will highly reduce sales rate

Where I live the ID I have uploaded literally covers also the billing address(or rather we don't have such a thing, since nowadays everything is online) and it's the national ID. So will I still have to do those extra steps, considering that the info I have provided already covers all of those?
I'll be honest. If I have to add additional very personal stuff like tax ID I'd probably just give up on using this site. Even if the information is handled by a "reliable" 3rd party at the end of the day, for me personally, that 3rd party is a company that's overseas. For a lot of the sellers that would hold true and as for US citizens that's just one extra unnecessary company having important personal information. I don't know about others, but I try my best to give my personal information to as little companies as possible. Heck I even had to fight with PayPal back in the days for the verification. Perhaps 4-5 years ago I might've begrudgingly agreed to give important personal info, but nowadays that's just a no-no for me.

Honestly I can't figure out what's the point of this KYC, unless perhaps you want to make the forum(business) more presentable for a sell. If that's what you are after I feel like it would backfire, since if most of the sellers leave I doubt that many buyers would stick around. Like it was already said a lot of the visitors are here due to the sellers and competitive prices and ease of use when making deals.

Also generally if you do want to go the PA, *** route, it would make more sense to actually give benefits(incetive) to current sellers, instead of trying to shoo them away.

I strongly advocate for maintaining EpicNPC as a dedicated forum platform. If there's a desire to introduce a marketplace akin to PA (PlayerAuctions), it should be executed as a distinct entity.

By keeping the forum and marketplace separate, we safeguard the integrity and stability of what has already been painstakingly established, while simultaneously leveraging the forum's potential to bolster the marketplace's growth.

To nurture the forum's expansion, I propose the appointment of community managers for each category, complemented by the integration of a calendar plugin into Xenforo. These community managers would be tasked with curating events within their respective forums, allowing users to engage by signing up for these events.

Moreover, the introduction of a community leader role would facilitate collaboration between leaders and managers. While managers handle event scheduling, leaders would oversee individual events, providing detailed feedback to managers. This feedback loop would inform future event scheduling, ensuring a consistently engaging experience for users and fostering increased community involvement.

There are numerous avenues through which the forum can be monetized without compromising the existing community. I possess several ideas in this regard and am keen to discuss them further to enhance Epic's standing even further. As it stands, EpicNPC stands as a pinnacle within its domain, and with strategic enhancements, we can propel it to unprecedented heights.

just saw this thread , is epicnpc staying as a forum or is it changing to different model ?
KYC is needed if seller is using epicnpc payment processor so does this mean every buyer needs to pay through your payment processor now or they can pay us directly?
if EpicNPC is heading in G.2.G or playerauction model then that would suck

I don't mind giving my address and other information to the Epic admins as a trusted seller account, but if you're trying to go in the direction of PlayerAuctions or other sites that people have to order through, that's a great way to kill the site. I stopped using PA myself with a perfect rep 300+ feedback account because they got more and more greedy with their cuts and more and more annoying about the seller and buyers being in contact. It's extremely annoying to do sales when you can't speak to the buyer on something like discord (quick back and forth conversation).

I would like to ask if this feature is implemented, what improvement does it offer in terms of scammers who are banned and yet continue to create 10 accounts a day and most mods don't notice? Since I consider this to be the main problem of the website that even though a person has been banned the next day he has a new account, if they plan to implement something strict like KYC and knowing that maybe half of the website will refuse, I hope it is so that the website is also clean of scammers

Agree i think admins should approve new accounts manually mean new accounts cant create any threads before admins check
and confirm their membership or they dont approve them till they complete KYC

A lot of forums I see the return scammers on it's sellers which this would help prevent, there will be some. You do not see return scammer buyers often because they do not make threads, they are there but rarely post. A lot of local mods do not seem to check posts and only react to reports or don't know what to look for return scammers.

@EpicNPC
Returning scammers are usually pretty good at covering their tracks. They rarely use the same ip or similar email addresses. You cannot ban on location alone, so usually the threads they make are the main indicator. Manual approval would not help much. Because the lazy return scammers usually get autobanned as it is. Manual approval will push new sign ups away as no one can be online 24 hours a day to approve.

im talking about the sellers not the buyers if the scammers cant make new threades before they complete KYC that will fix the issue it doesnt matter if they change their ip
for the buyers they can simply be allowed to make posts and use chat to contact sellers except for making threads which should be allowed only after passing KYC

it will not clean site of scammers, also there is already AI services that generating documents that can be used to bypass any KYC checks

We would not have the time to constantly do this. Even if we did manually review some accounts will slide through the cracks. We can’t always know its a scammer based off IP alone when there are several ways to change or mask an IP.

Majority of the scammers do not create any threads as it is.

KYC would help some but would not be a 100% way to stop scammers. There will never be a 100% way to always catch scammers unless we all lost anonymity online.

Scammers are usually lazy and want to make quick, easy money. Even though KYC can be bypassed, it adds another step for them to go through. Many scammers won't bother.

I believe it's unfair to expect Epic to carry the entire burden of identifying scammers.

As sellers, we often have a better understanding of their common behaviors, making it easier for us to spot them.

Additionally, there are conversational tactics that can help expose their true intentions.

However, Epic can certainly take action by banning known scammers and implementing measures to prevent them from creating new accounts.

----

A lot of scammers reach out through Discord. Having an official EpicNPC Discord server would help identify these scammers and also allow Epic to contribute to scammer alert server and bot.

We had a server once. It was banned by discord and then they banned anyone’s discord that was listed as a mod. We will not create another discord server.

Do you remember the exact reason it was terminated?

Do you remember the exact reason it was terminated?

"allows or facilitates harmful activities related to cybercrime"

The actual reason is more like "someone used thousands botted accounts to report your server at the same time and our automated report system deleted it along with everyone who was mod" :ROFLMAO:

My personal account was banned due to illegal activity/committing cybercrimes and some other nonsense they put on there.

Edit: "Your account was involved in malicious hacking, fraud, account or credit card cracking, and/or attempting to damage a computer network or machine" <-- This was the full ban reason.

Yet discord servers for hacking, cracking and credit card fraud still exist...

I am uncertain why only the Social Security Number (SSN) is accepted for members from the US, while alternatives like an ID number are not considered. For instance, in my country, the closest equivalent to an SSN is the JMBG. However, this number is already integrated into our IDs, driver's licenses, etc. Furthermore, unlike the SSN, the JMBG does not provide as much information about the owner. From what i know it's mostly the same in the rest of Europe, except maybe in Spain, and UK where they use SSN/ National Insurance number [correct me there if i am wrong].

Therefore, members from Europe face significantly lower risks than members from the US. Based on what I've seen here, this new change will mostly affect US members, whereas for others, it should not present a huge issue.

Hi, I know this update has been postponed for now, but I would like to thank Angel for shedding light on this issue here as someone who lives in North America.
This update will effectively kill your NA user base. We only give our social security numbers to government organizations, banks, and places of employment. Not some random online gaming website just so we can sell a game account.

I suppose this update will create a good market for resellers willing to give identification, since people like myself will only buy and not sell when this update goes through.

That's the reason why this update was postponed. The admins are looking into alternatives. It's likely that the SSN requirement would be dropped for now but ID verification would still be mandatory.

Thanks for the update!
That’s great, the announcement only mentioned it was postponed so that a third party could take over the data storage security.

I wouldnt mind giving up my BSN nor my billing adress, id even endorse the ability for payments through the site, but this should be OPTIONAL. I dont want this site to turn into G 2 G. for what reason should anyone opt to use EpicNPC, a newcomer in the marketplace vs the biggest player, or a site that still offers the freedom of a forum-like site. I don’t see why you should force me to take more cuts off of my sales when i already pay almost a 100$ monthly just to give my threads a green color and have them stickied. Very silly.

Been a member for almost 20 years and there is exactly zero shot I'm giving my social.

I think asking for these:
  • Verify Phone number
  • Upload ID
  • Billing Address
  • Government/National ID # (SSN, Tax #, etc)
Are just too much really, it's like you are going to some government institution or something,
and the risk are just too big for just some virtual trusted badge, if it's leaked, we are basically giving away our credentials,
the only way I will give these - is only if this site is as secured as my bank, aside from that, well, you are all exposing yourself too much,
and asking too much really, get some OTP method or something instead asking for a very very very private information.

That's just what's in my mind, feel free if anyone would complied to the new rules, just be aware that you are giving basically strangers your very private information,
anything can happened, no insurance policy, you know you are on your own if anything happened (data breached etc).
