Hey MD,

Recently, my friend ShadowStar and I have been talking about how we can help the community by posting some of the latest scams out there today. This list will constantly be updated as new scams are invented and being put into the works.

1)<font color="yellow"><u>Wrath of the Lich King Beta Scam</u></font> - So, you get an email from an anymonous user, and it contains somthing in the linges of ''Congratulations, you have been one of the few chosesen to be in the Beta Testing for World of Warcrafts Wrath of the Lich King. Further down the page, it will give you more false information, and redirect you to the site:

This takes the form of a reasonably well formatted mail (broken in gmail, though, which was the first thing that seemed off to me). It purportedly comes from "WotLK Development Team <[email protected]>". Actual headers are below, for anyone interested.

It has the text:

--------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings,

You have been selected by Blizzard Entertainment to take part in our special World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King BETA testing. To participate simply log into your account at the special World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King site at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wotlkbeta . After logging in and confirming your identity, you will be taken to a download page for the Worlf of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King BETA Client. We thank you for your help and participation in this process, as customer feedback is one of our most powerful tools in creating an outstanding game for all of our customers. If you do not wish to participate, simply take no action, and your account will remain as it is now.

Blizzard Entertainment Inc
Account Administration Team
P.O. Box 18979, Irvine, CA 92623

Regards,
Wrath of the Lich King Development Team
Blizzard Entertainment Inc.

Looks convincing enough, except for a few small details of style, but the link text doesn't go to that address; it goes to:

http://wowtlk-beta.awardspace.co.uk/index.html

... which is obviously not good (the URL actually given resolves to a 404 error).

There, it asks for your username and password for WoW. That's all anyone needs to steal your account, really.

If you've got that mail, and filled in your details, then first, change your password, and second, contact customer support at Blizzard as soon as possible.

And obviously, letting people in your guild know that this scam is out there would also be good.

The actual headers of the mail I got:

Be warned!

---------------------------------------------------------------

2) 1)<font color="yellow"><u> GM POWER ON LIVE SERVERS SCAM</u> </font>- Man wouldn't it be cool if you had GM powers on a live server? Well guess what, their are people who can teach you how to become a GM all you need to do is follow their easy steps which include sending your account name and password, how they catch you is by making a video of themselves showing skills only GM's can do but remember if you work a private server you can do anything. So be smart and <u>PAY ATTENTION</u> to what you are doing!

3)<font color="yellow"><u> E-MAILS FROM ''BLIZZARD'' SCAM</u></font>- So, you get an email from blizzard asking you to provide your account information because they believe the account ''Stolen'' or something of that matter and they need to ''Verify'' if you really are the Original Owner. Watch out for these people, remember Blizzard employees have unique e-mail addresses compare those to the fake e-mail from blizzard and you will be safe, also remember these scammers are extremely smart and advanced and can make the e-mail look as real as possible so be extremely cautious with these e-mails. Finally blizzard now sends real e-mails warning you that you have been e-mailed by someone using blizzards name in their address so look for those.

4)<font color="yellow"> <u>Cheap Powerleveling and ''Free'' Services SCAM</u></font> - Don't belive these guys, Probably around 98% of all ''free'' services scams. If you do ever consider buying PL, farming, or anything of that sort. Make sure you know the site is legit, and its not a free forum website/free hosts etc. For powerleveing etc. Remember Trust Who Verification is Required for any services on MD. MAKE SURE THE PERSON YOU ARE PAYING TO DO SERVICES FOR YOU IS TRUST WHO VERIFIED. For Powerleveling, and other Online gaming needs I would reccommend:

www.Forsaken-Farmers.com & www.ShatteredCrystal.com

4) <font color="yellow"><u>MIDDLE MAN SCAM</u></font>- This scam has you and another seller talking on aim. He will offer you a middle man and tell you about another legit trading site where theirs a well reputable middle man who is willing to help, expecting you to agree you give the middle man who can possibly be the seller on trillion or the sellers friend. They will act all legit, and won't even admit to them scamming you. They would just simply log off, and pursue there next victim.

<font color="yellow"><u>Scamming Middle Man Site</u></font> - www.WarcraftLoot.net

5) <font color="yellow"><u>Account Renting Scam</u></font> - If you ever get any IM's or Email/PM's regarding someone wanting to rent your account, just go ahead and block him/her. Account Renting is the one of the biggest scams out there, and also is the #1 to get your account permanently banned.

6)<font color="yellow"><u>Screenshot Scam</u></font>- So your on AIM or MSN or whatever then you get a message from sexytoad12 (this is an example name if anyone has a aim name for sexytoad12 lol and don't worry I am not calling you a scammer)
anyways Sexytoad12 messages you and wants to trade accounts you both agree to trade and he suggest Screenshots to prove changes have been made, you would make changes for example change the e-mail to his e-mail and he would do the same and make others changes and so and so on, now your wondering wheres the scam shadow? Well settle down and look you just got scammed, people telling you on any messenger that the safest way to trade is the SS method are scammers, why because they use a program called Kazou which lets you modify the page you are using to whatever you want and then be able to SS, so if anyone approaches you telling you that lets do the SS method tell that person goodbye /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

7) <font color="yellow"><u> Reputable MD Users Impersonation Scam</u></font>- As many of you might know, there have been tons of scammers Impersonating Reputable MD users by switching letters and numbers around in there AIM Screen Name. For example, AZNBOI1989 <--- Is the Legit Screen Name. cammers will try and do something like this with there desired Impersonated Screen name : AZNBOIl989 ( The 1 In 1989 Was changed to a lowercase L).

*****<font color="red"><u> TO AVOID BEING SCAMMED & IMPOSTERED </font></u>*****

To avoid this make sure you Always copy and paste the person you are doing business withs AIM into a new Message to see if they match.

Also, it never hurts to make AIM's with O's, 0's, L,s I,s and 1's and spaces. Those are the easiest to impersonate. Hoped this help.

7) <font color="yellow"><u>Hacked Paypal Scam </u></font>- Hacked Paypal Scam: If your dealing with Paypal make sure You know the guys name who is sending you the money from Paypal. If you receive fraudulent payments you can get your money recalled by Paypal and possibly more. Just make sure the name the person gives you is the same as the one on the paypal. Don't do business with people who have to use there ''Friends'' or there ''Brothers'' Paypal, too risky. It's better to send the money to who you are doing business with in case something goes wrong.

Thats about it for now, I will keep this post updated as I said /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Basically, just be smart and think about what you are doing. Here are some additional steps when making a trade or a sell:

<font color="yellow">1)</font> Don't rush into things
<font color="yellow">2) </font>Talk over phone
<font color="yellow">3)</font> Exchange info about each other
<font color="yellow">4) </font>Trust each other
<font color="yellow">5)</font> Ask for any additional information you may need before completing the sale.
<font color="yellow">6)</font> Ask for a Middle Man if one of you are still nervous about doing the sale.
<font color="yellow">7) </font>Be smart, don't do anything you wouldn't do if you weren't under pressure.

Usually scammers want to rush into things, and just want to try and get the account as fast as they can. If the person you are talking with stays with you throughout the process, and feels the same about this as you do. Then you most likely have a legit client. But, if the client is rushing through things, getting mouthy, and overall setting of a bad vibe, then call off the deal and continue your search. Be smart kids.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. I could help with just about everything /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Goodluck, and hope this will help.

Sincerely,

Destiny

Re: Scams of Today - UP TO DATE INFORMATION - HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN TRADING

Thank you /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"You go first" Scams: This scam ussally happens with something that cant be gotten back. Wow Cd keys, Ingame gold, etc. The scammer will want you to go first so he can take it and run. He will take you cd key and use it and then you are out a cd key. If you are dealing with cash, the cash always goes first no matter what in any case. Doesnt matter if you are paying or someone else, cash can be recalled where a cd key is used for good.

Accouts for Tangible Goods scam-This scam is acually very common where someone will trade you a wii or other tangible good for an account or something. Youy will give them the account and your item will never arrive and you are out an account or what ever you traded them. Make sure you see a picture of it with there name on somepart of the picture taken. Make sure there name isnt photoshopped on.

Those are two moer common scams, when I think of more Ill keep posting them. Gotta keep markee safe.

I would like to provide a few tips to help prevent 'chargeback' scammers.

1) Make sure you save keep any negotating msgs such as AIM/MSN and email(s) for at least 2 months (3 months would be safer). With the info presents, Paypal will be able to look into it.

2) If you're using Paypal, request the buyer to leave the EXACT information in [Additional Notes] section prior to sending money to prove that he IS the one that sent you money so he can't claim that it was "unauthorized" transaction. Information can and should include his PHONE numbers (make sure to call it to verify); REAL first and last name; and last but not least, a short msg i.e.: "I'm Josh Stenger and I'm buying this World of Warcraft account from Steve Peach".

I hope this would help.

And now tips for the BUYER!

Well, it's really simple. If you're buying an account with transfer(s) DOWN, you're in TROUBLE! That means that the original owner (if he's the OO), he can still recall the account. So, if you're buying such account(s) you're in BIG risks. However, if the transfer is UP, you may be in the safe zone. Make sure he gave you the REAL and correct spelling of his last name. One way to check this is through email and/or Paypal. Ask him to send you an email and see if the sender name matches the account and send him like 50 cents through Paypal and check for recipient's whole name under Account Overview.

when you talk about SS scams you tell everyone what program you can use to do it... dont encourage scammers! ;P might wanna take that out...

Re: Scams of Today - UP TO DATE INFORMATION - HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN TRADING

Im sure everyone knows about this...If it's been posted sorry I'm to tired to read all the threads. /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

MAKE THE PERSON POST IN YOUR THREAD!

This is the ONLY way to prove they are who they say they are.

I even make ADMINS & Mods of MD with great rep I've been talking to since I came here. Post on my thread before I send cash or trade.

ALWAYS - Make them post and if they say they can't say sorry and move on. If you are really parinod, have them copy part of your AIM convo into the post. /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There's an easy one you can't fake!

If you guys do not want to get scammed by scammers, Then think like a scammer. Seriously. Research, think about what they would do, go to sites dedicated to scamming, find out different ways, I dont want to ... give the site because I'm afraid it may be known as advertising, But there are sites out there, RESEARCH THEM, know all scaming techniques. Be familiar. Be safe.

LOL...

There are 2 types of scammers.

1. The ones that do it for a living and will take every advantage when they can. These are your pros that know what and how to do it.

2. Situational scammers. People that would normally not scam someone but took advantage of the situation.
===
It's like the old saying - Lock your doors to keep the honest people honest.
===

The problem here is that alot of the people that have a good reputation are kids or young adults. (Teens) And they are dealing with alot of cash and can quickly be tempted to scam someone to make a fast buck. Or they themselves get scammed and don't have the $$ set aside to deal with fraud. So they turn to scamming others to make their money back.

Just becareful!

Re: Scams of Today - UP TO DATE INFORMATION - HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN TRADING

Another scam is.

People who have rep offer you nothing for a good char, if you wanted 250$ for a char fully epiced pvp xfer up, don't fall into the scam of "dang he has rep ill give him a deal".

No. I am one of the only people on markee, that sell accounts that have tier 5 below 250.. I am one of the only people who budge my prices. a 25$ profit over 1 day is better then 50$ over 1 week.

Just remember, Scams some times are equal to ripping your self off.

Paid 175? Sell for 225. Paid 250, don't sell for 225.. sell for 275.

Get it?

Strangly there is actually more risk selling an account then buying one. You could always recall your payment with paypal.

As a side note to EVERYONE. I would not reccommend trading with anyone without a rep, PERIOD END OF STORY.

Not worth the risk.

Isn't there more risk if you're the buyer? As a seller if you are looking to scam, all you have to do is wait out the 45 days so they can no longer open a paypal claim, and then recall the account.

Re: Scams of Today - UP TO DATE INFORMATION - HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN TRADING

You forgot one.

Paypal phishing scam.

It's not one of those stupid "give all your information to ____"

Well, this one they set up a phishing site on any free web host.

They then send out emails using a email spoofer with html support for the email.

The email you get basically says "40% cashback, click here to start shopping"

It looks like this:

31321321it5lj2.jpg

The phisher looks like this:

48302382yi1.jpg

There is also a transferring page after that so it looks legit.

35378617ov1.jpg

Yeah watch out for that, the email doesn't show up in spam or as a phishing alert.

Re: Scams of Today - UP TO DATE INFORMATION - HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN TRADING

There is a new scam ( at least new to me, I haven't heard of it yet). I witnessed it with my last trade.

Someone will trade you and make up some lame, but yet believable excuse to trade back the accounts, he will give you back the password and then when it gets to changing the email back to yours, he will have an email made with the same first letter on the email as the first letter of the email you want to put back on your account and he will put his email on your account and it appears as if he has changed the email on the account back to yours, since blizzard's site only shows the first letter of the email on the account.

Watch out for this scam.

Unfortunately I know from first hand that moving your purchased character to a different server does NOT protect you from the original owner getting his account back.

I purchased an account and transfered 3 characters from the account to a new server. I played the characters regularly for a month. After a month (or so) I tried to log in and I no longer had access! A few weeks later the accounts were for sale again! I don't know what the owner did to get his/her account back but it is not safe to assume just because you transfered the account that you are safe.

One way to check this is through email and/or Paypal. Ask him to send you an email and see if the sender name matches the account and send him like 50 cents through Paypal and check for recipient's whole name under Account Overview.</div></div>

</div></div>

Probably gave the blzzard rep sexual favors ;]
