Just watched his newest video on YouTube and I have to say I'm still a bit set back by his decision. He put his heart and soul into this decision and these video clips, and for that I'm very thankful and I still love him to pieces (love to meet him someday), but it sounds like his plans for legitimizing the market are non-existent as of this point in time.
He's basically hoping to get game companies a commission for sales so it's allowed in their ToS and you won't get banned for doing it, but they're never going to do that. They personally might find it lucrative, but so much of their fan base foams at the mouth against RMT's that it would be detrimental to their playerbase and subscription base to even consider this. I mean, can you imagine the day MMOChampion published the news that "Blizzard now sells gold"? It would be a disaster zone!
I really hope he knows what he is doing, but after watching that clip I still don't know what the purpose of the new MD is. It sounds like a place to talk about how they can convince game companies to take a commission and change their ToS for the next 3-4 years.
Will I join? Sure, just to show my support for Marcus. But I highly doubt anything on the business end will prove to be worthwhile there. No MMO is going just drop their guard and say "oh hey they're not doing it anymore, they're cool." That's the last thing on their mind. They have thousands of other websites (many chinese) that they have to tackle and they have their fan base supporting them on it. Many people absolutely despise gold selling and other things like it, and for that reason, I highly doubt we will ever see WoW's ToS at the very least ever change.
Maybe your goal Marcus is to get F2P MMO's to switch over to allowing this, but is this really going to bring in as much business as the WoW market right now? No F2P game even comes CLOSE to the number of subs WoW has.
All in all, I respect your decision, I'm glad you didn't delete this community, I hope things work out and as I said I will join your site again, but I hope you can find a way to make people want to join it. Because as of right now, I don't see a reason people would stay when they still have MMOBay and other alternatives like it.
