Boneshamanbnshmn,

I am selling an account and asking for your wisdom. After talking to the buyer everything seems fine so far. The buyer has agreed to pay thru WU. Now what steps should I take to ensure a safe buy?

A phone conversation. But what else is there because im not checking their paypal info VS. the info i was given.

Also is giving them the ID/PW/Change e-mail first, then receive the money, then giving rest of the info a safe transfer?

for YOUR security, only give them the account information AFTER you have walked away from the teller with the actual physical money in hand. now, the buyer may not be willing to trust you, so give him/her whatever information is necessary to make them feel secure (e.g. your phone number, address, scan of ID card etc...)

as long as the MTCU, buyer's first and last name / address / phone number match, the WU teller will let you simply walk away with the money and that will be that. in this case, you do not really even need a phone call, matter less checking their paypal information. though if it makes you feel better, call their LANDLINE to verify who they are, then go to 411.com and match their landline to registered name and address stated on the WU.

personally, i would not give anything to the buyer first, but giving them the account name and password first before payment is acceptable.

paying a seller with WU is like asking for a scammer unless the sellers is really reputable... people who are willing to do WU here on MD are rare to come by. keep in mind though, it IS possible to recall a WU payment up to 6 MONTHS after if it was paid for with a credit card... you are never 100% safe... verifying their identify is a good way to prevent this if you want to be extra careful.

good luck! feel free to follow up on this thread with more questions!

last thing! before you direct the potential buyer to your reputation page, keep in mind that it is not an officially recognized form of user feedback here on MD... again, good luck and contact me or post here if you need anything else.

Alright, so I'm new to this whole selling shenanigan and wanted your knowledge on the subject. I'm advertising the sale of my account but I really have no idea how to keep myself secure in the process.

I am using my dad's verified paypal address (since I don't have my own) and wanted to know the safest way to make sure I'm getting my money and he's getting the account with no scams in between. I'm 100% sure I'm going to do this through paypal; but I'm not sure of the order and how it works. What info do I give him before the payment is recieved? How do I match up his billing address and phone number from his paypal - I will be demanding phone conversation to verify identity. How do I make him feel secure with buying an account from a total newbie to this system.

Any answer would be appreciated - Thanks!

this one is a tough one for a new user, esp given one with no paypal experience at all. lets put it this way, it is VERY likely that while using paypal, you will get scammed.

personally, i would recommend that we work to a compromise between paypal and western union (please read this: http://www.markeedragon.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/1665603#Post1665603) at the very bottom of the page, it dictates what you must to do make a paypal to WU transaction (or you buyer must do).

this way, you can walk to the western union teller after you have receive the WU information from the buyer (who has paid via paypal using WU as a 3rd party), walk away with the cash in hand...

now, at the risk of repeating myself:

for YOUR security, only give them the account information AFTER you have walked away from the teller with the actual physical money in hand. now, the buyer may not be willing to trust you, so give him/her whatever information is necessary to make them feel secure (e.g. your phone number, address, scan of ID card etc...)

last thing! before you direct the potential buyer to your reputation page, keep in mind that it is not an officially recognized form of user feedback here on MD... again, good luck and contact me or post here if you need anything else.

again, i STRONGLY do NOT recommend paypal, as the number of ways to scam WAY OUTNUMBER the ways to protect yourself. moreover, if you are using your father's account, you would be asking for a whole lot of issues later...

I recently traded for an account
everything has gone smooth, but i have been temp banned.
i am required by blizzard to fill out a 'Account Retrieval Form' but i do not have photo id of oo, and after a search of the website, i cant seem to find the oo on here to contact him.

ps the person i traded with was not the oo
nor was the person he got the account off

thanks for any help you can give me

if the account has been temp banned, then technically you just have to wait 3-5 days for the account to be unbanned?

otherwise, if you have the account retrieval form from blizzard but cannot contact the original owner, then you will have no choice but to attempt to locate an alternative. keep in mind that falsifying identification documents is a federal offense.

otherwise, you are stuck with a useless account...

good luck!

they can indeed recall the money up to 6 months after sending paypal through their credit card company, or they could file an unauthorized payment through paypal.

your best bet is western union (check guides located in my signature)

good luck!

boneshaman,

i really need your advice. i want to buy an account. seller has 2 positives and trustwho verified. with that in mind, i have 2 questions:

1. seller refuses to give ID. Do you think it is safe to buy from him? since the expansion is coming, i don't want to buy the expansion and then got the account recalled.

2. is it better to transfer to new account or keep the original account?

thank you very much for your kind attention.

1) the TWV seller in question - if he is unwilling to give his ID, get him to fax his drivers license (you in return, can give him yours as a sign of good faith) --> nowadays, i require the ID to be notarized before i accept it. while ID is not 100% needed, i prefer having it for the reason you suggested as well as personal security

if he is really unwilling to give his ID, its ok. match his LANDLINE and address to his paypal verified / trustho name / address, then cross check it with IP or 411.com

2) i prefer to transfer to a new account so if he does recall it, its all the less hassle.

n.b. make sure he is not using a fake TWV. get him to email you via his TWV email and his paypal email before doing anything.

how does he want to sell you the account? western union? paypal? let me know so i can help you out with more info :P

good luck!

boneshaman,

thank you very much for your advice. what's bugging me is the id thing. i mean he seems honest and all. twv confirmed email, but i haven't got his numbers yet.

i tried using middleman with +30 rep and twv. when this middleman tried contacting him he refused to even talking to him. i understand he's being cautious. it's just weird.

he wants me to use WU btw.

the price is also not cheap for the account he offered. i found out that many better gears characters were sold cheaper. don't think it's fair if i suddenly offered him lower than what i already offered him.

what do you think bones? to be honest, i don't mind spending extra to have a great account and secure deal.

anyways, thank you very much for your kind attention bones. i really appreciate it.

well, with WU if something goes wrong... then well you wont have the power to do anything if the deal goes south and he recalls the character etc...

I sold an account to this person that AIM'd me, and he payed by paypal, once i got the money from him, it said status: "held" ? then paypal retracted the money.. how do i get the money back?

i believe that held usually means that paypal is clearing / validating the money - NOT locking it. so you can just wait. however, i am not 100% sure - try asking zerotolftw (he has a "ask me anything about paypal" thread somewhere in the same forum section)

good luck!

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Hi markees, I was reading the thread "GUIDE: WHAT IS WU / HOW TO USE" by boneshaman, it's really helpful but I still have some questions about WU.

If a buyer goes to an agent and sends me cash, Can I check the payment online? If yes, my understanding is that if the online record says it has arrived then that's money in my bank and cannot be reversed. Am I correct about this?

If the buyer sends me a WU payment, let's say using an AMERICAN PayPal account, is it still not reversable?

I checked the WU homepage, it also has an option to send money online using a credit card. Can they chargeback a payment like this if the online record shows the money has arrived?

Thnaks.

Thx debeer, so basically I can say I'm good to send goods once I see money has arrived on WU's website. Am I correct?</div></div>

thank you for taking the time to read the guides! personally, i would first physically pickup the payment at a local teller before sending / shipping any goods (cash in hand) - as it is possible to cancel a WU payment before you have picked it up.

moreover, to supplement dbeer's post, it is indeed possible to recall a WU payment if you pay via credit card - you can call the bank and tell them it was unauthorized. this is, however a messy process and you will be charged with fraud if caught doing such a thing (most WU tellers photograph you etc...)

good luck!

in a nutshell, collect the cash in hand, THEN send it.

I'm trying to sell my priest. The entire story is I decided to do recruit a friend and after I got a few 60's there I wanted to transfer my priest over but I couldn't because when I made the account around two years ago I put in a fake name and Blizz wouldnt let me change it. So I rerolled another priest on the new account and am going to sell my gladiator priest. Without any real information on the account how easily will I be able to sell it/trade for gold on my new account.

without real information you are going to have to sell it REALLY cheap cause NO ONE wants to take the risk of an unsecure account which maybe recalled or becomes irrecoverable.

sorry mate. also, you are going to have to go out on a limb to verify yourself to them...

Bought an account for 300 dollars, upgraded to Wotlk and xferred to my char's realm, and 4 days after we did the transaction I receive an email from blizzard asking me to recover the account by sending in ID and information. Obviously I am not the OO and do not have access to any such things, so what am I to do? Can I in the worst case scenario make sure the account gets perma-frozen so he can't pull this again?

seeing you bought the account from the user, maybe you can work something out and contact him for a scan of his identification. blizzard sometimes locks the account cause they noted something specious, be it an IP change / flag or a transfer using a different credit card name. this does NOT mean that the seller tried to screw you over.

contact him to try and resolve this issue.

good luck! if you need anymore help, you know where to reach me!

I need some help here. I'm trying to sell my account on MD. I've never sold an account before. I have to use my dad's paypal address because I'm a minor. I'm the original owner of the account and everything, but I have a small dilemma. What do I do if the person wants the information BEFORE they pay? I have to use paypal, so WU is not an alternative. I don't want to give out my information to someone who won't pay, and I don't think they want to pay because they are afraid I won't give the information? How do I gain the trust of the buyer? Also, I know first hand that emails can be faked to be from a certain address. A great example is the Monark impersonator. He faked his email address to be that of Monark's TWV email. Damn near scammed me out of a 400 dollar account. I managed to recover it, but I'm unsure of how to progress from there. I want to gain the trust of the buyer so that I can get paid first, then hand over the information. Thanks for the help

use the PM system here on markeedragon to prevent impostors.
use the guide in my signature to prevent a paypal recall

When sending someone a photo ID (drivers license) should the DL# be shown or hidden? Is that a red flag for buyer's or sellers?

If your sending someone your Driver's license, should you be worried about them having your DL# as well as all contact info?

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: BlueberryCave</div><div class="ubbcode-body">When sending someone a photo ID (drivers license) should the DL# be shown or hidden? Is that a red flag for buyer's or sellers?

Sending a copy of your drivers license out to someone is an extremely bad idea. With that they can easily steal your identity, even with the number marked out. You do not know the security of buyer you're sending it too, and you don't know who they're sharing it when they sell the account later.

if sending a copy of your drivers license is a bad idea what other alternatives is there to send them? im from uk and only have a drivers license or passport,
wait i have a student ID card would blizz accept that?
thanks

it really depends on the risks you are willing to take to prove to the person in question that you are serious about this sale / buy.

personally i must accept some form of gov ID or its off.

either that or western union is the only alternative.
