Most guides tell you stuff that doesn't help you because it's too late. This is about what you can do NOW.

1. Get money back.
2. Get your account back.
3. Make them pay.

GETTING YOUR MONEY BACK
Most scamming happens through paypal. Paypal has strong buyer protection, but it will not help unless you know what to say.

1. Start by logging in and filing a dispute.
2. Indicate that goods were not delivered.
Do not indicate that the good were virtual, just not delivered.
If a long time has passed, say goods were not as described.
3. Paypal will begin a dispute process, and you win, guaranteed.

Success is in your favor because their policy requires sellers to provide tangible proof of delivery. Paypal policy is against buying virtul goods as much as selling, so don't tell them what it was. If you do, then "goods not as described" is better than "goods not received."

Some scammers use hacked paypal accounts, but that's usually when buying and is less likely when receiving funds.

GETTING YOUR ACCOUNT BACK
If the account is in your email address, request a password reset. Change the email address.

The chance of a recovery is low. However, you can email the game company all information and tell them how you got that information. Game companies are against buying and selling accounts. It is very likely that the account will be banned. If not banned, it will be flagged and watched. Then make a second free email address, and send in another complaint in which you claim to be a second person that bought the account.

MAKING THEM PAY
Start out by reporting them. If you have email from them, you can get forensics from the email that can be used to determine their true identity through their internet service provider. Specificly, the IP and timestamp. If you are unfamiliar with viewing email headers, then ask your nearest geek for help.

If you had their telephone number, even a cellphone number, you can use that to track them down. Go to 411.com, look it up, and then follow the links for more information. This will cost about $25. Most tracking will have to be done yourself. Small crimes are usually ignored by authorities because they're too busy and they have big fish to fry.

Most account fraud isn't by professionals, it's teenagers that think they can get away with it. Simply getting their info and writing a letter or getting their parents involved can be powerful. Sending them a google map to their address is especially intimidating.

Some instant messenger programs reveal the IP address of the other user when they are sending messages. use a computer with no other software or open windows, make a new chat name, say hello to them. type netstat -n at the command prompt. Practice with a friend first to get used to it.

Don't forget social engineering - keep them talking, in as many ways as possible, as long as possible to help you gather more information. Again, consult someone that's familiar with computers.

Well just say you paypal that you provided the goods, and that if he claims "I didn't get provided with the goods" or "I had unothorized access to my account" don't even let him say that, say that if you didn't provide him with the goods, that he wouldn't start complaining after half a year, and that if he didn't recognize like 300$ being pulled from PayPal/his bank account/Mastercard he's an idiot.

Ya but what if he does it 2 weeks from now. Sigh, I thought paypal was trustworthy. I figured being a honest seller everyone would be safe. Now I find out that im more at risk then the buyer.

Whats to stop somone from buying all the acounts they want, and reselling them. And just telling paypal they never recieved anything?? Why are buyers so protected and sellers screwed?

It's because it's virtual goods.

So there is absolutely nothing I Can do to protect myself.
I even have an email reply from the person i sold to confirming they have access to the acount. Even with this , im still at risk? I have absolutely no rights? I Can be screwed whenever?

Yeah mail them a piece of paper with all the info on it, and put it in an envelope and use this trick.

http://my.break.com/media/view.aspx?ContentID=236940

It's a way to speed up the mail delivery, you write down a 7 digit code including the branch and stuff, it's a vid tutorial on how to do it.

If you don't think the link up there is safe or whatever, go to www.break.com and go to videos>catagories>how to and search "mail" and the vid name is "How to speed up your mail delivery"

How is me sending somone mail proof? I just dont get how Paypal can say OH ya your protected buying virtual goods but you selling virtual goods, your screwed.

If i have emails from this person confirming they go tthe acount am I protecteD?

And Im not selling the acount, im selling the character. Going to transfer it.

Please somone give me some kind of reassurance that I can protect myself in some way.

The emails might help if their the same email as the one listed on the PP account, but also the shipping the info helps because you can provide a tracking number to paypal and he CANNOT SAY THAT YOU DIDN'T PROVIDE HIM WITH THE GOODS.

He also can't say that it was an unauthorized payment because paypal check's the IP's on the account and realizes it wasn't.

If its so easy to screw sellers... why are buyers ever affraid of scams? When all you have to do is renig on your paypal which they allow you to do regardless of anything, it doesnt matter if somone got scamed or if somone is the scammer. It seems the buyer has all the protection in the world. This CANT be right.

No, but that's how it is. I like to get ALL the info I can on the buyer, and confirm all of it, use google maps, yellow pages, reverse phone lookup, etc...

And if he tries to recall the payment, I always call his house and usually it's his parents who answer, I say:

"Hi is your son home?"

"Uhm..what's this regarding?"

"It's regarding a payment he recalled through Paypal over a WoW account"

Then I talk to the kid see what's going on, and I always like to say "Is ____ your address"? because it always scares them for you to know where they live.

I got scammed a while back now. I sent this guy $100 and he did not deliver the goods. I filed a dispute, but was only able to get 80 cents from him >.<

We have completed our investigation of this case. We attempted to process a refund from the seller's account to your account. Unfortunately, the seller's account does not contain the funds necessary to cover this refund. We were able to recover $0.80 USD. We have taken action against the seller and are working to recover the remainder of your refund. We will contact you when we have more information. No further action is required of you at this time.

[/ QUOTE ]

Does he need to put money into this account before I can get my money back? Is there anything I can do in this situation?

Thanks in advance.

It means that he either doesn't have a Bank card and credit card linked to the account, and the person only had 80C as his paypal balance.

Paypal said their taking further action against him, you should get your money soon, hopefully. But yeah if hes a scammed I doubt he'd register his bank/cc card now.

Best thing to do when selling a character is transfer the toon to a new account and then certify mail the CD keys to the persons address (if they are verified through PayPal ofc). This gives "tangible" proof that the person recieved the account.

Wow.. you know, I have just been reading up on all of these scamming threads and protection and [censored] and I really didn't realize how over my head I was last year when I sold my first account...
I actually was putting my auction up on ebay, lol, and they tore it down like four times (i thought my disclaimer was bad or something so each time i added more to it).
In the end i got a hold of someone, seemed legit, so i went with it. sent him the acct/pw and he sent me the money via paypal, no physical goods were sent. After paypal cleared to my bank account, i gave him the rest of the info (cdkey, sqa, etc.) and xferred his new character and started the account back up as a good gesture. I really had no idea how lucky i was to get a legit buyer, and from of all places, ebay... haha
Now that i realize that it will probably never ever happen again, I'm going to just go through the trouble, err... precaution, of sending the letter to the address and such.
These topics have been really helpful. thanks /u/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sadly, I have just been scammed as a seller...I setup a sale of my WoW account and the "buyer" put 700 dollars into my paypal, after this I gave them all the info etc.

I check my email about two hours later and I get emails saying that the payment had been reversed, here I am without the money and the account, I really have no faith in human kind anymore. Going to do all I can to get my account back...

PS. This thread should be required to be read before people register for the forums, it would've helped me out alot as this was my first time ever doing any type of over the internet sale.

You just gave anyone who was looking to scam other people all the info they need to do so...
You just told them how to recall money from paypal and get away with it if the seller doesnt do everything specifically correct.

Sadly i to just got scammed, i was buying an account, sent the $300 and got nothing in return, I just did what the first post told me, on opening a dispute, should i or should i not, escalate it to a paypal claim? Or leave it.
