Recent Downtime

We got hit by a massive DDOS attack yesterday that knocked us off-line for most of the last 24 hrs. The attack was 1.5 million connections (6GB) per second. Millions of IP address from many different countries which overwhelmed our firewall and was unblockable compared to the normal DDOS or bot attacks we get.

This was most likely a massive botnet that uses millions of infected computers that don't know they're infected. I don't have the money to block an attack of this size, so the only recourse was to null the server, which is basically taking it off-line.

Hopefully it's over, but if you see the site down again, it's probably because we're getting attacked again.

I recommend hopping on CloudFlare. It'll help you out heaps. A 6Gb/s attack by today's standards is actually quite small and can be done with way less hardware than you imagine.

This. Exactly. That's a tiny attack that most hosts worth their weight in salt would easily be able to mitigate automatically.

For starters, they hit somewhere in the 400Gbps area.
Second, they hit big targets, and make big noise about it.

I've signed up to Cloudflare and am taking other measures to better protect the site from attackers. To complete some of these changes there will be more downtime in the near future. We anticipate downtime to last for a few hours, but we will schedule these changes for very late/early morning when traffic is at its lowest so for most of you you won't even notice.

Sorry guys, we made a minor change yesterday that we anticipated was not going to have any downtime, but due to a misconfiguration on my server it turned into a much bigger issue which cause the recent downtime.

There will still be more downtime tonight starting at 1am EST, but should only last 1-2 hrs. There will also be a small 10-20 min window coming up soon where the site might be down again while we update something on the server.
