Is it standard to use the "Gift" option when paying with paypal to avoid additional fees/etc, or is it customary to use a standard sale/purchase/invoice?

hmm i dont see any gift option on my paypal acc, only "pay for goods and service", "send money to friends and family".

Sending by gift is the best since it has no fees

Yeah, no fees added and it lowers their success on chargeback scams.
If they use "buying a product", they will take fee from the money sent to you + he can chargeback anytime by saying that "He never received his goods that he purchased from you".
PayPal will let him win the dispute/chargeback because PayPal does not support sales of intangible goods (items you cannot hold).
