Marvel’s Contest of Champions is a long running IOS and Android game which continues to see support by developer Kabam. That support comes in the way of Marvel studios releases and announcements. Right now the special characters to have are repeated to the release of Black Panther, and every Marvel movie before has had their special characters advertised on the landing page of this fighting app. Other than the constant advertising, Contest of Champions can be really fun when you get into later stages of the campaign or when it begin really competing online. But where does one begin? There are so many things to keep an eye on that the starter can get quite flurried. Don’t worry, your first ten or so campaign levels are simply there to teach you the ropes. If that’s not enough, below are some tips and tricks that I recommend to anyone starting in Contest of Champions.

Flurry, Block

Whether you’re using an acrobatic character like spider man, or monster like Hulk, this combination of attacks is sure to leave your enemies powerless over your moves. In the game you’ll learn about light attacks, heavy attacks, and blocking. You’ll also learn some dashes and others but those aren’t important in this game changing combination. Every character has a limit at which their light attack can be pressed before they stop to take a breather. The best way to win over on the many starter enemies (and ultimately beginning online) is to waste these quick attacks, and then sit back and block while your enemy tries to do the same thing. Rinse and repeat this combo for an insanely effective flurry of punches that basically make beginner fights last about a minute.

Always Choose the Right Path, and Always Complete 100%

In the story campaign there are paths which you can take to complete any given quest. These paths are filled with loot and of course enemies blocking your way. The first time you go through these levels pick the paths that have the most reassure or loot you need. In much of the beginning game you’ll be needing ISO’s (which level up your characters) or champion crystals (bought with units which you can earn through loot found in campaign. These two currencies should be kept in mind when choosing paths. Don’t fret, choose the wrong path of want the treasure from all? The best thing is that you can return to these levels and do them over again, this time going to those different paths and getting all of the Lott from the level. I also recommend doing this for every level you play, and not progressing further until you’ve gotten 100% of the loot from each level (which is indicated upon choosing levels to do). This way you can obtain all the loot possible at any given time, and don’t have to waste time going back to boringly easy campaign levels (I speak from experience).

Upgrade All of Your Champions, Not Just One

Though it can be tempting to use all your ISO currency on one favorite champion, I recommend not doing this until you’re well into the game. Why? Simply because you’re going to need a whole team to defeat the harder beginning quests, and the more higher level champions you have the better. This tip is especially useful for grinding those quests out without having to use much time in between for your champions to regenerate health. But this tip is actually one that can be thrown out the window when it comes to online play because those matches mean being accustomed to the style of your characters, and so upgrading your favorite ones can be quite useful.

Liquidate...Invest

Whenever you open free, or even purchased crystals containing champions you don’t want or need it’s very useful to sell those champions for upgrading others. If you’re carrying mostly two star champions, you don’t want to have a one star wasting space. Instead, use the ISO from that one star to improve your whole team instead of trying to get that one star’s power up. This, of course, is for beginners. If you’ve progressed far enough to the point that you want to have nuance in your team composition, then keeping one stars can make some sense. No matter the strategy, remember that Contest of Champions is constantly changing and evolving with every update, so its best to save up a ton of currency and only spend when you absolutely want to. I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief beginners guide to a fighting game I think will keep providing players with great content well into the future.
