League of Legends is a game defined as a MOBA. It is fairly new (starting it’s beta phase sometime the fall of 2009.) What is a MOBA you may ask? A MOBA is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Games that follow this genre are DotA(Defense of the Ancients), HoN(Heroes of Newerth), the almighty Warcraft 3, and of course, LoL(League of Legends).
Okay, now that we have the basics out of the way, let’s get into the intricacies of LoL. I’ve taken the time to make a map outlining most of the basic, need to know stuff of LoL. The map you see is Summoner’s Rift. At the moment, there are only two maps, being Summoner’s Rift (which is meant for 5v5) and Twisted Treeline (3v3). Twisted Treeline Guide will be blow.
All Buffs are transferable by way of killing the user. If someone on the enemy team kills you, they get it, vice versa. This can happen an unlimited number of times, for the buff resets every time it is transferred.
Summoner’s Rift Guide:
Map
Yellow Dots = Spawn Points.
Black Dots = Neutral creeps. These can be wolves, wraiths, or golems. Neutral camps do not gives buffs and only give extra gold/expierence. They spawn at 1:40 and respawn after being killed everyone 100 seconds. They are all in specific areas.
Light Blue Dots = Creep paths. These are where your minions will spawn, and attempt to push their way to the enemy nexus, your goal in the game. Destroying this wins you the game and your minions will help you a lot with this. They must first push through at the minimum, 6 turrets and an inhibitor. Killing an inhibitor spawns ‘super minions’, minions stronger than usual.
Blue Dots = Crest of Ancient Golem Buff (Also called Blue Buff, Golem Buff, Mana Buff, etc.) Crest of the Ancient Golem gives the holder 15% cooldown reduction on their spells and lets them regen 1.5% of their mana per second. It spawns at 1:54. It takes 5 minutes to respawn after killing it.
Red Dots = Blessing of the Lizard Elder Buff (Also called Lizard Buff, Red Buff, etc.) Blessing of the Lizard Elder gives the user a slow and deals true damage based on the opponents level. The slow is halved if it is on a ranged character instead of melee. It spawns at 1:54. It takes 5 minutes to respawn.
Green Dot = Dragon. Dragon gives 190 gold and expierence to the team that kills it. This mean that everyone on the team gets the gold/exp if only one teammate kills it. It spawns at 2:30 and respawns 6 minutes after killing it.
Purple Dot = Baron Nashor. It gives the Exalted with Baron Nashor buff. It grants 40 AP(Ability Power.) 40 Damage. 3% of your max health in health regeneration. 1% of your max mana in mana regeneration. Spawns at 15:00. Respawns after death ever 7 minutes. All living members of the team that kills Baron Nashor will receive the buff.
Other than locations/spawn times of creep paths, some basic stuff about Summoner’s Rift is champion placement. You will usually see 1 person middle, 1 top, and 2 at the bottom. With 1 person jungling (taking all the neutral creeps.) Not every game there will be a jungler, in which case, 2 people will be top. In high ranking/serious games, people will set up champions accordingly by grabbing 1 AP carry and sending him mid, 1 tanky champion top, 1 jungler, and 1 AD Carry/Support bottom. The support at the bottom will usually not take any creeps and let the AD Carry farm/keep the AD Carry safe.
Twisted Treeline Guide:
Map
Black Dots: Neutral creeps. They spawn randomly and in different groups.
Yellow Dots: Buffs. These are randomly placed as well. I’ll give a rundown of all the buffs in Twisted Treeline below.
-Rabid Wolf gives Crest of Nature’s Fury, increasing attack speed by 20% and reducing cooldowns by 10%.
-Ghast gives Crest of Flowing Water, which increases movement speed by 30%.
Red Dot = Grez, the Lizard Lord. He gives the Blessing of the Lizard Elder buff. The buff grants bonus damage (3 x Champion Level dmg/s, ticks 3 times) and slows enemies (10/20/30% for melee, 5/10/15% for ranged). This is the same buff as on Summoner’s Rift.
Green Dot = Ebonmaw the Terror of Zaun. He grants the Crest of the Crushing Wrath buff, which gives <championlevel>% buff. It spawns at 4:40 and respawns after death ever 5 minutes.
I have not played enough Twisted Treeline enough to comment on strategy. If someone else would like to do this, they can.
