I peruse the scammer thread every so often, keeps me safe when I am buying/selling/trading, but I frequently see scammers who have been previously banned, they come back, make new accounts and keep scamming.

Are the mods able to IP ban these scammers? subnet bans are pretty good too because I heard they ban anyone within a 1 kilometer radius of that IP.

Just some food for thought.

Issue is that we would banning innocent users along with the scammers. Many colleges would be affected, as well as ISPs who run on proxies.

Well when I try and log onto a website like MLG from my school, it says that I am banned for using a proxy, why dont you just ban people who use proxies? There is no need for them really.

Incorrect. A subnet ban means you are banning a range of IP's (aka a subnet). For example if I were to ban the ip 1.2.3.0/24 then that would ban all addresses from 1.2.3.1 thru 1.2.3.256. While a /24 subnet ban would be unlikely, you get the point.

We will be banning scammers by IP when we can.

I also believe that certain ISPs run proxies subliminally. I think AOL is one of them. Not 100% sure.

And now you all wonder why they come back even if you ban there ip ?

Seriously since when do IP's get people away? In many country's even in belgium where i live you ip changes everytime you reset your modem. IP's are no longer static like they used to be and that is for security reasons. The only way you can get scammer to leave for a long time = MAC bans.

MAC address : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address

This means if you happen to be able to ban that you hurt them in there pocket if they wanne rejoin the forums, and it is way more efficient than a ip ban.

Same thing whatever :P

If you ban proxies your banning people who use proxies, if your banning people who use proxies your banning proxies.

So what are you supposed to do when the person overseas has to use a Proxy to get the page to load in the first place?

You can't ban proxies; because you feel like it.

If people still fall for the same redundant scam then it's their own fault. Markee/MMOBay have both taken all necessary pre-cautions as far as letting people know who/what to look out for in a scam attempt.

You do as much as you can when it comes to banning, but it's like security measures in all places : If you aren't willing to screw lots of innocent people, scammers can find a way.

A subnet would be the worst thing a site like this could ever do to prevent scamming, countless people would be banned needlessly.

Also, incorrect. A MAC address ban would simply only ban the computer (or Network Interface Card) of the scammer. With any bit of tech. knowledge you could simply change your MAC address, swap out your NIC, or use another computer. Not to mention the forums don't support MAC address banning.

Pretty Much..

Banning proxies won't solve the problem that you're adressing. It's 2010, any decently "equipped" internet user knows how to bypass a simple bump in the road like that.

We can take another note fro d2jsp and give them scammer tags and not ban them

Well what is best ? Let them work or just make them reset there modem? Another option = Search there data where there live and go beat them up. Anyway nothing can keep them away permenant. But the MAC adress is the most effective !

if people can get scammed by others with an AIM LINK in their profile / signature / avatar -- then I'm curious too see how they won't by a scammer tag next to their name.

Unless it's bold and noticeable...

But, you could always limit access...

Scammers could be tagged and not able to even have the read/view/post access to any forums except ones that don't matter, which are many, but you get my point.

with the new direct aim button we should run into less imposter issues.

i dont think resticting forum access would be necessary.

obviously the scammer tag would be nice bold and viewable.

Sadly enough, people don't make use of this great feature. I, for one, have removed my AIM name from my signature and simply have the AIM button. If people want to contact me, they can do so by clicking the button and getting into a direct conversation with me. There is no reason why users should still be copying/pasting AIM addresses if this feature is in use.
