how can i tell if a payment is "gifted" to me isntead of jsut sent normally? under the details tab it jsut says payment instant. i know supposedly paypal changed it so now instant covers gifts, and all other money which is not eheck. is there a way too see what they are using to pay me? how do other sellers know if the payment is actually gifted or not?

I would recommend reading the following article which explains exactly what you are a requesting an explanation for:
How to Tell If a Paypal Payment is a Gift | Webupon

Basically, to figure out whether or not a PayPal payment was sent as a gift, you need to click on the 'Details' link in the payment description.

Once there, you will see a 'fee amount' (most gifted payments do not have a fee amount). You will also see a link labeled "Issue a refund", click it.

Once you have clicked the "Issue a refund" link, you will or will not see a message stating that the payment is currently pending. If the payment is currently pending, the money was NOT sent as a gift. If the money is NOT currently pending, the money was sent as a gift.

This is what the page should look like if the payment was NOT sent as a gift:

All of this information was found in the article linked above so please forgive me if any of it is incorrect or no longer relevant/up-to-date. :)

Great guide. Adding this to my PayPal Virtual FAQ

Quick warning: Although this trick can help determine a normal payment from a personal payment (gift), you still can't tell if it was paid with a credit card payment and the fee covered by the buyer or from a bank transfer. You still be at risk for a chargeback if the gift payment was paid by a credit card.

With this trick, it may finally be possible to tell the difference between a gift and Mass Pay! How exciting!
