I gotta disagree with you guys, this game still has plenty of punch left. It gets updates monthly and has a very dedicated player base. Even over the last year it has seen massive improvements in many areas. Also the developers have basically committed to expanding the game indefinitely, after the failure of FFXIV and a lot of players returning to XI. They just released a new battle area last week!
People have been saying for years that FFXI is dead, but at this rate, i wouldn't be surprised to see it go a few more years at least.

I am pretty surprised it's still running or if they even get new subscribers to the game. I heard it was a pretty hard game to play as a new comer.

Seriously anyone who says this game is already dead obviously doesn't play anymore.
New updates and content being released every month.
1000+ people on my server during primetime. Still over a dozen servers.
New LS system that allows you to pick groups from a list. There are 5 NA and 12 JP groups listed right now.
My LS still does stuff 4-5 nights a week, if not every night.
They killed fishbotting so if you mean "dead" like "you can't make real money playing" then yes that is true.
