Guild Wars Gold/Ecto/Z-keys: Safe to buy them?

I'm interested in purchasing a great quantity of the aforementioned currencies. However, I've read numerous posts about people getting banned for buying them.

Is this a risky thing to do? What can I do to make it less risky?

Yes. You can get banned buying gold in Guild Wars.

What can I do to make it less risky?

Buy from a secure company, not foreign that explains the process properly and/or buy from someone you feel is legit.
