Choosing a Class

Excluding the two classes that you need a level 70 character to unlock, there are still way too many different classes. Each one has four possible advancements that each specialize in different skills as well. If you’re the type of person who can become paralyzed by indecision, don’t worry. You have plenty of character slots to work with. If your first choice doesn’t suit you, go back and try again.

The indicator over on the right side will show you the strengths and weaknesses of each class, as well as how difficult the class is for first-time players. This little chart can be pretty handy, but the skill level is fairly relative. I find Thief to be one of the easiest classes to play, but it’s listed as Expert difficulty for some reason.

Getting to the first advancement only takes an hour or so of gameplay. Once you get to that point, you’ll be able to test out
the various skills of the four possible advancements. Noodle around in the testing area until you’ve found the advancement that best suits your play-style.

Why can’t I choose my appearance?

Unfortunately, the appearance the characters were designed with are the ones you’re stuck with. That is unless you want to spend real life cash on clothes for your video game avatar. A lot of the basic avatar items are cosmetic only, but not all of them. Certain avatar items, such as Clone Avatar items, give stat bonuses as well as cosmetic changes.

A Couple Tips for Dungeon

Pick up everything you see. You’ll automatically hoover up any gold you walk over, but you’ll have to stop and manually grab items and weapons that are dropped. It may not seem like it at first, but that useless trash will become invaluable later on in the game.

Break everything. Barrels, destructible scenery, trees with berries on it. Attack everything. It will sometimes drop gold or items you’ll want later.

It might seem obvious, but keep your combo high. The higher your combo is by the end of the dungeon, the better goodies you get at the end of it.

Keep an eye out for these magic circles. They’ll spawn randomly in the dungeon. You can find ones like this one that will restore HP and SP, or you can find circles that will grant you temporary buffs. I find it better to avoid using the circles while initially exploring the dungeon. I usually double back to collect them after I reach the boss room for a quick top-off.

Try to socialize a little. Unlike a lot of more modern MMOs, this game doesn’t seem to have an instance matching function. You’re going to have to form up a party before going into the dungeon if you don’t want to go in alone. You can find communities in the usual places. The
DFO Forums, or Reddit has a /r/DFO if that’s more your speed.
