Chat Box Vote

After a short test just now on the Forum homepage Chat Box the following information was learned.

CPU load decreased 45% when chat was turned off
CPU load increased 65% when chat was turned back on

As it turns out the Chat box is the single most intensive process on the server, but since many people like it I want to try to keep it.

Please vote on one of these two options.

1) Chat box stays
2) Chat box is removed. New Chat room is created in Chat bar at the bottom of the screen.

In option 2 the chat is hosted with another provider so it has no impact on server load. Meaning server load will go down the full 45%.

we have had option 2. The result was a cheap feeling chatbox that was not smooth to use. Keep the current chatbox. Its a nice flow on the site and most of the time a welcoming site for new members.

The chat box has been replaced with a chat room. I was able to embed the chat room into the forum homepage so it looks very similar to the old one but doesn't take up the resources.

Well test this out for one or two days to see how it goes, but from people first impressions, they seem to like it.

Old chatbox is tons better, cant see who is verified and things of that nature. Also it just feels "cheap" as i said in my previous post. My 2 cents, old way was better. I would prefer the pages loading just a split second slower then use this box

This chatbox is horrid. -_- way too spammy, no ban feature, can't see who mods are or who is verified or not.

Dislike.

Bring the old one back.

The chat will be customized over the next few days.

1) The sound will be turned off
2) The Left/Joined notifications will be turned off
3) I'm not sure if it's possible, but I'll see if I can get Members username colors to display for Verified, Mods, Admins and Pro Sellers.

Imo, should have "tested" all this prior to applying it. We now have a chatbox that doesnt "flow" with the look of the site, adds a cheap feel, isn't ready for public use, and just all around looks like a turd on the front page of the site .

How do you plan on banning or removing spam from spam bots?

All mods and super mods have the ability to ban members from the chat to deal with spam. Members breaking the rules will be giving infractions as usual.

if we stick with this form of the chatbox instead of the old one (which i hope we don't) some ideas:


Make it more "MiRC feeling" the ability to create your own channels and things of that nature.

Add a Bot that has a spam throttle on it that can dish out auto punishments for offenders / repeat offenders.


If it is more like the MiRC style you will be able to promote people to mod the channel / admin the channel. Just some ideas, but look into it mIRC: Internet Relay Chat client


The ability to click someones name in the "online" section and make it turn into a new channel for a "whisper" or "Private Message" format wouldn't be a bad idea.

New chat box i see, let's give it a try. Sad that the previous one took so mutch CPU load but i honestly miss the old one already.

Will the name change that was purchased work in there as well? and changing it from saying "Me" to the actual user name

These require coding changes and will take a little while to implement. They will be done by the end of next week.

I can increase the font size today. I'll make some adjustments to size shortly.

Ability to add channels? Maybe put the instant messanger thing on it? So that you can msg people that are in chat box in a new window on chat box. Elimating the need for 2 forms of instant messaging

I added the ability for memberd to create their own chatroom. The rooms will be automatically removed after 5 mins of inactivity.

Sending IMs to members in a chatroom is not possible, so the bottom chat bar will need to be used for IMs as usual.

Is it possible to have the "new channel" stay up on the "tabs" like now you have "Lobby" "Create New Window" and EpicNPC Chat

Any way to leave EpicNPC Chat open and have the new chat open too (like to tab between them) without having to go back to the lobby and click?

EpicNPC told yesterday that his programmer working on the colored name so it should probably be up soon but they working on it.

He's working on another project that will be finished soon. As soon as he's done with that he'll be making the chat box modifications for username colors and changing "me" to a username.
