Changing Account Name on WoW Accounts - Worthless for Security

Hi,

I was wondering how paying $250 to a service that allows you to change your first and last name on an account protects it in any way. Before people who offer these services get defensive; hear me out.

There is a paper trail associated with changing the first and last name on a WoW account. If the original owner calls Blizzard and attempts to get the account recalled, the name change will not protect it. Blizz keeps track of the name change, including the old first and last names. The original owners name is forever associated with the account, even if it is inactive.

Regardless of what these name changing services tell you, their method is all the same across the board. They submit a legal name change form to Blizzard (forged of course). Blizz keeps this document on file more than likely.

So in closing, my thoughts are yes, changing the first and last name on your WoW account will allow you to transfer toons to other accounts you own, or merge them. However, I fail to see how paying to change your first and last name in any way protects you from account recalls or closures.

Scenario:

John Doe the scammer sells his wow account to Jimbob Smith. Two months go by and Jimbob is really enjoying his new abbout. However, one day Jimbob tries to log on and realizes his password doesn't work. He tries to reset his password and realizes that Battle.net doesn't even recognize his login anymore.

So Jimbob thinks he got hacked. "No worries" thinks Jimbob, I have paid to have the name changed. Jimbob then calls Blizzard, and Blizzard tells him to fax in a copy of his driver's license as proof that he owns the account.

Meanwhile back in scammerland, John Doe has just gotten off the phone with Blizzard. John Doe has told Blizzard that he hasn't logged on in 2 months and most certainly did NOT change his name. Blizzard asks John Doe to fax in a copy of his drivers license.

At this point Blizzard either sides with John Doe the scammer, recalls the account, and resets the accounts name back in John Doe's first and last name.

or

Blizzard gets a copy of a driver's license faxed from both John and Jimbob, notices the pictures are different, sides with John Doe the scammer.

or

Blizzard gets a copy of a driver's license from both John and Jimbob. Jimbob was smart enough to photoshop John's OO id picture on to his id before faxing it. Blizzard locks the account permanently.

I fail to see how name changes provide any security whatsoever to a purchased account.

I'd like to add that 'giving away' the method is creating an inflation in rep.. many shady people are getting 10-15 rep within days for simply giving away a now-free method, and then have the setup to scam others easily.

It should be a bannable offense to share the method for rep.. that's my opinion.

Blizzard doesn't accept notary TOU forms for this exact reason anymore and have changed it to

When it comes down to it the only real advantage to it, is for the purposes of battlenet friends. If you have the money or time I think its worth people knowing you by your real name, especially if your going to get to know them better like sharing facebook and whatnot facebook and what not.

Indeed indeed. It's sad to see how so many scammers finds this method as a good opportunity to sucessfully scam others with. Me self and many others has got scammed this way by a guy, but he sold the method instead of giving away for free. It's completely tragic.

Sad thing is, I've been able to change battle.net account names for free. No forged documents or anything. I've also done it once for a friend free of charge. Totally works, but it is in no way a permanent solution to keeping an account. It is really just used to transfer toons to another account you have. People are idiots to pay $250 to an illegal service. There is a much simpler and less illegal way of doing this. Of course I am not going to sell or give away account name changes. That information is just for me and a few close friends to know. I agree it should be a bannable offense on this website. Selling a false sense of security is a scam.

I warned everyone that "Dontremember" was an idiot and a scammer but unfortunately he was not banned until it was too late.

Like wise, the next set of scams/bans will be from the people selling the unmerged wow accounts right now and stacking up rep. I finally tracked down where they are coming from and most assuredly stolen albeit 3 years ago so no one probably remembers. But this is just another reminder of how sad this marketplace is.

The internet in general has lost a lot of it's flavor and appeal. Mass marketing and everyone just simply not giving a tinkers damn about each other has made it depressing. This site is a prime example. Cest la vie.
