buying gold help

i am interested in buying some gold for WoW, but am curious as to what is the safest way about handling the transaction.

is it best to trade the gold in person to the other person i.e. i buy 5k gold, someone walks up, opens trade and gives me the gold?

i always thought selling something in ah and let the sellER buy it from u for like 1k each , or something but i dont know . i want to know also
