I recently got a PM asking for a quote in order to get a dicount for a large quantity of ingame currency (EVE-Online). We both agreed to make a transaction and this is the conversation right after:

  • Buyer: Ah you dont accept paypal payments done by credit cards. If I cant pay via credit card then I dont think this purchase will happen. Let me know if you change your mind.
  • Me: I don't have any problem with Paypal using credit card... Maybe you missunderstood something?
  • Buyer: This is the message I get from Paypal: Sorry, the recipient doesn’t accept payments using this payment method. Please choose another.
  • Me: Can't you simply add funds to your paypal account and then transfer them?
  • Buyer: I can but it shows up on my checking account. It's ok, i'll just look for another seller. Thanks anyways.

I'm not sure, but the checking account excuse sounds like bull**** to me...

It worth to mention that the buyer have no feedback at all.

As far as I know, you need to allow purchases from Credit Card. With the new Paypal layout, I'm not exactly sure where it is now.. But the method I vaguely remember when I had to do this myself, was...

Profile/Settings > Selling tools > Getting paid and managing my risk > Block payments

The reason he would want to do Credit Card is because let's say he is a scammer he will do a chargeback through his Credit Card Bank Account. That usually is 100% money back.

If he sends the money through paypal funds then the dispute will be investigated by paypal and not the bank so he has a chance of losing. With bank it's usually 100% money back.

Thats the only reason he would refuse to make a payment from his funds. Its a security people buying accounts might use to protect themselves on an account as they can be taken back. Never a reason on currency payments as its a one time deal and cannot be stolen back.

Looks pretty fishy to me, so I'm not taking the risk then.

Thank you for your answers!
