So you’ve reached level 50 FSH. What now? You could do the quest that leads you on over to Heavensward, or you could try to fumble your way through collectibles. Or, you could work on your next big challenge. Specifically, you can try your hand at the Feast of Famine quest.
This quest, of course, requires you to be at least level 50 FSH, and you need to have completed the Level 50 quest The Beast of Brewer’s Beacon. Completing the Feast of Famine can take hours or even days, so prepare yourself for the long haul.
The first thing you’re going to want to do is to see to your equipment. If your perception isn’t high enough, you won’t ever have a chance to catch the required fish. Boost your perception and your gathering as high as you can before attempting this quest. If you’re unsure of what equipment loadout would be best, you can look up a gear calculator such as Crafting as a Service. Materia is also an important way to keep your stats current. Although they can’t do complex melds such as overmelding, you can find NPC materia melders in each major city-state now. Even if you’re not high enough level to affix the materia yourself and don’t have any friends to do it for you, you have options.
Next, you want to be focusing on the time and weather. The fish in this quest will only show up during certain times of the day, and sometimes only under certain weather conditions. You can use a website such as Cat Became Hungry to keep track of your windows of opportunity. While websites such as Eorzea Time are useful when trying to get collectibles, they aren’t very helpful for this quest.
Once you have your equipment sorted and have an idea of the timeframe you can catch these fish during, it’s time to actually try and catch the fish. We’ll go straight down the line.
Which means, we’re going after the Endoceras first. You may recognize this area as one of the places you could catch a Full Moon Sardine back during your level 30 FSH quest. You’re going to need to do that again, as the only way to catch the Endoceras is to mooch it off of an HQ Full Moon Sardine. You’re only going to get the opportunity to catch the Endoceras from 9 pm to 5 pm Eorzea time. You’ll have the most luck if it’s cloudy, but windy and foggy weather work too.
The next fish on our list is the Helicoprion. This pain in the butt can be found in the Sagolii Desert. You can only hook him by mooching a Storm Rider. The best time to catch this fish is from 8 am to 8 pm, and the weather you’re looking for is a heatwave.
Our final fishy friend of this leg, the Namitaro, is probably the easiest of the bunch to catch. You can find the Namitaro any time of the day in Urth’s Gift, although you’re more likely to encounter one during a thunderstorm. Unlike the others, you don’t catch the Namitaro by mooching. You have to use a topwater frog as your bait.
Once you have these three fish in your inventory, go turn them in and get the next shopping list. This time we’re going to be looking for Kuno the Killer and a Shonisaurus.
We’ll start with Kuno first. Kuno can be found out in the North Shards from 9 am to 11 pm. He has a small chance to come out during fair; clear; cloudy; or foggy weather, but you’re really going to want the weather condition to be Gloom before you set out to catch this fish. Mooch our murderous friend off of an Assassin Beta, and move on to the next fish.
Like Namitaro, the Shonisaurus can be caught any time of the day over in Witchdrop. Unlike Namitaro, the Shonisaurus is a double mooch. Wait until a blizzard strikes and go out to catch this monster fish. You’re going to need to mooch a Mahar off of a Cloud Cutter in order to catch yourself a Shonisaurus.
That brings us to our final fish in this questline. Nepto Dragon. This fish can be caught anytime, but be prepared for a long wait. The only way to catch this fish is by mooching it off of Northern Krill, a Giant Squid, or a Merlthor Goby. Each of these has about a 1% chance or less of landing the Nepto Dragon. You’ll have better luck if it’s raining, and the best luck if it’s showers. Other than that, the only thing you can do is be patient and keep trying until you catch it. Once you have, you’ll have completed what is probably the most difficult fishing quest in the game.
You can catch this fish at the Rhotano Sea (Privateer Sterncastle) fishing spot. To get there you have to talk to the ferry skipper. You cannot swim to the ship. Although, you can swim with a really chill shark if you want.
