Buying an XBOX Live Account - how does this work?

I'm looking to buy a game character account that is tied to the sellers Xbox Live account. I understand if I use a middleman they take account info, I pay the seller, the mm gives me the account info. Its really not that simple "technically speaking", however.

I'm curious how this is done safely so that the buyer gets what they purchased and the account is not somehow "recovered".

As I look at my own xbox live account, it appears I can change the email address and password, but there is another verification method that is required. This verification is usually a cell phone number or another email address.

These verification methods can be changed, but it takes 30 days to go through.. during which at any time the seller could potentially take back the account.

What do people do to safely process this type of account transaction? I'm not asking about verifying the user, using a middleman etc. but the mechanics of how this is done.

If you’ve removed and replaced your security information within the last 30 days, you’ll have to wait until the 30-day period is over before you can do it again.
The 30 days is only applied if you already changed the security info recently.

This is actually a good thing.

If the seller is unable to change the recovery security settings, then you know it's already been changed within the last 30 days. This should be a red flag and could mean the account was recently sold or stolen.

If a seller can't update the security settings, I wouldn't recommend buying it.
