As long as you don't download warez programs or visit shady pr0n websites, the router and the windows firewall should be enough. Either way, Bitdefender, Mcafee, Norton and all the big and old companies will do ok, but you also need some good hardware specs too, so it doesn't cause any lag problems. Also, it depends if you wanna keep it just for regular scans or you need it active all the time.

Invisibility22's point is correct. So long as you don't click on anything that asks you to "click on this or that to win X amount of money", you'll be fine. Otherwise, I've only had good experiences with avast and kaspersky.

From experience, I can get by with Malewarebytes, generally. Although the premium version of it is recommended and a lot of people these days don't seem to want to spend money on security (don't understand personally).

There is a free antiviral alternative that is free and fairly secure as well. It's called BitDefender and it was ranked as one of the best free antiviruses around. I've used it, it runs as a service and is fairly unnoticeable. Doesn't feed to heavily off of RAM or CPU. It's pretty nice.

The link for those two programs is below.

Malwarebytes

+1 on Malwarebytes, always have it running, amazing program.

For my AV I use Microsoft Security Esssientials, its light weight and I've never had any problems with it, I'd also reccomend Avast, which I use to run and know its good.

With the amount of crypters out there that encrypt virus's to hide them from anti-virus software, you can not really do anything about it. The best anti-virus software that is detecting encrypted virus's is "malware bytes" they are one of the best. I personally use that, and SUPERantispyware for real time protection. But remember, putting aside the programs, YOU are the best anti-virus. Don't always depend on programs to do it for you.

Well I tried free avast and avg and they were not good. 360 internet security was nice (blocked some internet pages) but how secure it is, thats question. I deleted 360 IS
Kaspersky and BitDefender (both internet security) are very good. I liked Kaspersky IS (it blocks everything but it slows down little my laptop).
Now im using nod32 smart security and no problems so far.
So what I know Kaspersky IS > BitDefender IS > Norton IS

But one is sure. IF you dont visit adult sites, gambling casino sites and similar sites, if you dont push all kind of advertisement, if you dont install all kind of softwares with patches and cracks you are safe without antivirus.

A big thumps up for avast and Malwarebytes. Doesn't take a lot of resources, I've never had any virus or similar the almost 10 years I've been using them both.

In my opinion, as long as you know the internet pretty well you don't need an antivirus.

I use Microsoft Security essentials which I wouldn't recommend but it does the job, but I dual run Malware Bytes alongside it which I can vouch for 100%. It's great.

The antivirus program is a kind of insurance against unforeseen circumstances. A lot of people live their lives without ever thinking of insurance, and some minority of them /those, who look carefully over their address bars, mail attachments and usb drives/ never hear of such thing as virus.

I would suggest using Avast. But if someone really interested in your PC, then none AV are going to help you :). Best AV is your Brain
