I was looking to buy a new video card and was comparing the two. The GTX 1080 is $700 usd while the GTX 1070 is $450 usd. Not really sure if it's necessary to get the GTX1080 and I feel as if it is heavily overpriced due to the hype it's gotten. Any opinions?

I think you will be happy enough with a GTX 1070.

1080 looks like overkill to me. More than 50% higher price for not even 10% better performance.
Go with the 1070.

The founder's edition is very simple:1) Nvidia is butthurt that people think of their reference designs as less capable, because they are.2) Partners don't want to compete with the chip maker so Nvidia decided to make their reference design extremely unattractive based on price.3) Nvidia can squeeze more money from early adopters, people that will pay extra money for an inferior product just to have it sooner. That's it. That's the explanation. You are much better off waiting for an Nvidia partner to release an overclocked AIO liquid cooled device that's bin'ed for the best performance.
